CENTRAL NEW YORK – Each of the area’s high school boys golf teams with a fall schedule will wrap up play this week by competing in their respective Section III tournaments.
Small schools go first, traveling to Beaver Meadows on Tuesday, with the large schools, including West Genesee, vying for sectional honors Wednesday at Radisson Greens.
When the top WG Gold team went to Baldwinsville last Monday to make up a rained-out Sept. 7 match at Timber Banks, it ran into a strong Bees effort and took a 193-215 defeat.
Max Lauricella and Cameron Hovater both shot 41, but four B’ville players went under 40, led by Nate MacGregor’s two-under-par 34. Ryan Till shot 43 for the Wildcats as Connor Christie and Owen Zoanetti both posted 45.
Then WG Gold challenged undefeated Cicero-North Syracuse Blue on Wednesday at Lakeshore Country Club, almost catching the Northstars, but taking a 202-206 loss.
Christie shot 39, topped only by the 38 from C-NS Blue’s Jake Nardozza. Joe Snyder tied for third with a 40, while Ben Glass had a 41shared by two Northstars to offset the 43s from Lauricella and Eric Korzeniewski.
WG’s Blue team lost 186-209 to league-leading Cicero-North Syracuse Blue last Monday at Northern Pines. Max DeMass shot a 40, bested by four Northstars led by Sean Lawler’s 33. Jason Clifton and Anthony Pirro both posted 41 ahead of Nick Stemkoski (43) and Ashton Fassinger (44).
Moving to 9-3 on the season, Westhill handled LaFayette 197-234 last Tuesday at Orchard Valley. Danny Young’s 37 beat out 38s from Luke Gilmartin and Aidan Ryan, with Kyle MacCaull getting a 40 and Devin Young adding a 45.
Then it was a trip to Cortland Country Club to face Homer, and the Warriors lost by a single stroke, 207-208, with Mitch Riter’s 36 for the Trojans a difference-maker as he was four strokes ahead of Devin Young. Anthony Maglisco managed a 41, with Ryan and Danny Young both shooting 42 and Gilmartin earning a 43.
Skaneateles, also expected to be a factor in the small-school sectional tournament, returned to action last Tuesday against Tully and beat the Black Knights 224-265.
Jack Marquardt and Tyson DiRubbo both shot 39 at Skaneateles Country Club ahead of the 44 from Tully’s Ryan Shute. Shawn Luce and Will Cowden both finished with 46 and James Lovier added a 54.
Before all this, Jordan-Elbridge fell 243-267 to Tully last Monday at Millstone. Colin Jewsbury shot a 39, the low round by five shots over Ben Weller, but no one else on the Eagles shot lower than 59s from David Lawless and Devin King.
A day later, J-E lost 252-260 to Phoenix, with only Weller breaking 50 for the Eagles, his 48 trailing the 42 from the Firebirds’ Cameron Dryer and 47 from Shawn Froio. Mario DeMarco got a 50 for J-E and Laurel Jones had a 52.
Then the Eagles lost to LaFayette 206-248 at Orchard Valley, with the Lancers getting the top five scores ahead of Jewsbury’s 46 as Lawless shot a 49 and Jones had a 50.
Playing its fourth match in as many days, J-E fell 231-276 to Tully on Thursday, though Jewsbury’s 43 tied for second, trailing only the 39 from Shute. Weller added a 46.
