ONONDAGA COUNTY – Maybe at just the right moment, the Fayetteville-Manlius Green boys golf team is finding the gear it needs to claim another Section III Class AA title.
With the sectional tournament looming on Wednesday at Radisson Greens, the Hornets went to Lakeshore Country Club last Friday and knocked off previously unbeaten Cicero-North Syracuse Blue 197-200.
To pull it out, F-M Green had Velton Perry shoot a 37 for nine holes, with Luke Weisiger adding a 39 as Jack Sommers and Jack Antshel both posted 40 and Jason Carter added a 41.
That beat a Northstars squad where Jack Wolanski had a 38, with Riley Rumble adding a 39. Sean Lawler managed a 40, Carter Costello had 41 and Jake Nardozza shot 42.
Launching its regular-season homestretch, F-M Green routed C-NS Green 191-242 last Monday as Perry returned to form with a 36. Sommers had a 37, with Colin Mott adding a 38 and rounds of 40 posted by Carter and Anthony Ahn//
When F-M Green topped F-M White 204-218 last Wednesday afternoon, Perry’s 37 beat the 40 from Andrew Ahn that led the younger Hornets. Anthony Ahn also had a 40, with Weisiger getting a 41 Mott and Carter saw their 43s equaled by Dan Stark and Jack Antshel.
Before all this, F-M Green had lost, 195-208, to Baldwinsville on Sept. 22 at Cavalry Club, with Sommers’ 39 the lone score under 40 for the Hornets as five Bees did the same, led by Aidan Farmer’s 35.
When the Section III boys golf small schools had their gathering Tuesday at Beaver Meadows, Christian Brothers Academy was a clear favorite after its undefeated run through the Onondaga High School League.
It continued last Tuesday when the Brothers beat Homer 189-204 at Drumlins, even as Mitch Riter’s 33 for the Trojans was the low individual round.
Joe Nicholson countered with a 35 for CBA, closely followed by Jack Gregory’s 36. Homer’s Lukas Quinn had a 37, but the Brothers had the next four best rounds, Jack MacLachlan posting 38 as Luke Snyder and Dan Angelo both posted 40 and Emmet Kilmartin added a 42.
Then, moving to 11-0 on Friday, the Brothers handled Chittenango 203-219 at Woodcrest, overcoming a 34 shot by the Bears’ Tyrus Kelly.
This time it was Gregory in front for the Brothers, his 38 ahead of the 39 from Nicholson. Chittenango’s Alex Moesch had a 40, but Angelo posted 41, MacLachlan had a 42 and Snyder and Kilmartin both finished at 43.
