CENTRAL NEW YORK – When they first played on Sept. 11, the Skaneateles girls volleyball team required three close-fought sets to get the best of visiting Solvay.
Still undefeated 10 days later, the Lakers went on the road for a rematch with the Bearcats and met with a very different result.
Once Solvay emerged from a tense first set with a 28-26 win, it gained more confidence, won the second set 25-22 and then closed it out 25-15 in the third set to end the Lakers’ five-match win streak.
Alicia Granger had 11 kills and 12 digs, with Maggie Kemp earning eight kills and three blocks to go with a team-best four aces. Emily Garnett added six kills as Jade Coyne got four kills to go with 13 digs.
On a busy Solvay back line, Toni Sardo had 15 assists, helped by 10 assists from Brayla Bagozzi, who also got six digs as Neveah Baker matched Granger’s total of 12 digs.
Roaring back to form on Friday, Skaneateles took just three sets to defeat Jordan-Elbridge 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 and improve its overall record to 6-1.
As for Marcellus, it rolled past Phoenix 25-4, 25-10, 25-9 last Tuesday night, seeing Sarah Louer, Brooklyn Finarty and Miranda Stewart each gain five aces.
Louer got 10 kills, with Finnarty and Stewart picking up six kills apiece. Bella Palen had four kills as Jenna Mattison dished out 23 assists and Sam Richer four assists. Elaine Grattan earned 12 digs and Finnarty added 10 digs.
During Thursday’s 25-20, 25-13, 25-11 sweep of Mexico, Mattison earned 22 assists and five aces, with Louer again recording 10 kills helped by Stewart’s seven kills and Finnarty’s six kills and eight digs.
When West Genesee challenged undefeated Baldwinsville last Monday night, it marked yet another instance of the Wildcats getting upended by the Bees.
The 25-21, 25-16, 25-17 loss had Sonya Dunham put up 22 assists for WG, passing it to Cami Zajac, who had nine kills, and Cameron Rosenthal, who got six kills and eight digs. B’ville got 15 kills from Kyrah Wilbur and 28 assists from Madison McKaig.
Then WG lost 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 to Fayetteville-Manlius two nights later. Rosenthal and Claire Devore both earned six kills, with Zajac getting five kills and Rosenthal four aces and 12 digs. Dunham earned 17 assists and Zajac got nine digs.
Westhill dominated its match against Cazenovia last Monday night, sweeping past those other Lakers 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 largely due to the 27 assists posted by Ava Baty.
In addition to her 12 kills, Kate Heinrich put up four aces. Baty also had four aces as Alison Lancette got three aces to go with her eight kills. Isa Cardoso had four kills and Kendall Fountain added three kills.
Then the Warriors faced Homer on Thursday, splitting the first two sets, but then taking charge in the third set on the way to beating the Trojans 25-20, 16-25, 25-14, 25-19 to improve to 4-2 overall.
Bishop Ludden was 3-3 going into the week following a sweep at the hands of Bishop Grimes on Sept. 16, but rebounded last Monday to top Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 25-11, 25-13, 25-10. Bridget Dunham notched 10 aces and Amelia Adams served up nine aces, Adams adding seven assists.
The Gaelic Knights then swept Institute of Technology Central 25-18, 25-13, 25-18 on Thursday, with Dunham earning eight kills as Serena Royal got four aces. Adams doubled her total to 14 assists and Allison Bradley got four kills.
Then Ludden lost in five sets to Corcoran on Saturday 13-25, 25-18, 25-15, 19-25, 29-27, with Adams getting 28 assists as she fed it to Dunham (11 kills) and Bradley (seven kills), with Sarah Fink earning nine digs.
Jordan-Elbridge, off a five-set win over Cazenovia Sept. 16, fell in four sets to unbeaten Hamilton, splitting two close sets before the Emerald Knights prevailed 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21. Gabby Smart has seven kills, with Sarah Lane getting six assists as Colleen Kelly (13 kills) and McKinley Craven (15 assists) paced Hamilton.
