ONONDAGA COUNTY – Rain kept the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls tennis teams from meeting each other again last Thursday afternoon, but the delay only lasted 24 hours.
When the weather cleared on Friday, it was the Warriors emerging with a 5-2 victory over the Northstars, fueled by a clean sweep in singles.
Angelica Underwood got it going by beating Ava Schiff 6-2, 6-0. Diana Kozenyatko handled Danielle Crivelli 6-1, 6-0, with Gabby Underwood claiming a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Jaila Killingbeck.
C-NS got points in doubles, where Autumn Brown and Megan Johnston topped Meghan Bell and Olivia Magnarelil 7-5, 6-4 as, in three sets, Eve Campitello and Megan Mieves took a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win over Kelly Geiwitz and Jasmine Rawda.
The Warriors countered with Sheridan Bryerton and Olivia Valentine beating Meghan Obleman and Mackenzie Wessels 6-4, 6-2, with the other match defaulted to Samantha Manheimer and Bianca Vaccaro.
Liverpool faced West Genesee last Monday, their second encounter in seven days, and like the first one the Warriors were on the wrong end of it, falling 6-1 to the Wildcats.
Only in first doubles did Liverpool get a point, from Bell and Gabby Underwood, who wasted little time handling WG’s Kayla Latone and Calina Olson 6-1, 6-0.
Magnarelli, in third singles, could not hold on to an early lead in a 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 defeat to Isabelle Wells, with Angelica Underwood falling to Angelina Llanos 7-5, 6-3. Geiwitz and Rawda had a good second set in a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Angelina Allen and Margaret Mello.
Up against Baldwinsville a day later, Liverpool picked up one more point, yet still fell to the Bees 5-2.
A first-singles classic had Angelica Underwood erase an early deficit to beat Ayla Kalfass 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Geiwitz went the other way in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Hannah Gould. Rawda lost in straight sets.
Pairing up in doubles, Kozenyatko and Gabby Underwood beat Julia Quinn and Ella Tromblee 6-4, 6-2, with Magnarelli and Bell falling to Aubrey Benton and Reagan Doan 7-5, 6-2. The teams of Ashleigh Rosen-Bianca Vaccaro and Maiya Fitzgibbons-Grace Geary both lost in two sets.
When C-NS returned to the court last Tuesday against Oneida, it lost, 6-1, to the Indians, its lone point coming from Mieves and Golden Duru in doubles as they topped Jenna George and Madelyn Harris 6-1, 7-5.
Of the three singles matches, only Holly Costello earned a game in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to Kaylyn Curro. Brown and Megan made some traction in doubles, yet lost to Mikah Albro and Hannah Myatt 6-2, 6-4.
