ONONDAGA COUNTY – Having won its first five matches of the season, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys volleyball team put that mark on the line last Thursday night when it paid a visit to Fayetteville-Manlius.
In the opening set, it appeared the Hornets had gained an advantage when it won 27-25. But the Red Rams quickly fought back and took the second set 25-16.
Each of the next two sets proved close, but J-D won them, 25-21 and 25-20, to improve to 6-0 overall.
Matt Keeler finished with 19 assists and Aidan Bates got 17 assists to anchor the Rams’ back line. Ty Parker picked up 12 kills, with Aaron Ko adding 10 kills and Avery Tyson getting five kills and four blocks.
F-M, in defeat, saw Chris Cleary earn 15 kills, Max Danaher add 11 kills and Andrew Li earn 10 kills, all of them in front of Jaden Duggal, who picked up 40 assists. Danaher also had five aces.
Each side had won on Tuesday before their showdown, J-D sweeping Syracuse City and F-M doing the same against Central Square.
The Rams’ 25-22, 25-23, 25-13 victory featured two close opening sets, but J-D pulled through as Parker and Ko both had 11 kills. Keeler picked up 19 assists, while matching Ko and Tyson with three aces apiece as Bates got nine assists.
F-M, meanwhile, took apart Central Square 25-12 in each of the first two sets and closed out the Redhawks 25-19 in the third, Li setting the tone with his four aces.
Dylan Venditti, with six kills, led a deep front line as Li got five kills, with Danaher and Cleary each earning four kills. Duggal had 24 assists and James Addonizio amassed 11 blocks.
After the loss to J-D, F-M met Living Word Academy on Saturday and lost again. The first two sets were split, but once the Lions claimed the third, it put the Hornets away 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19.
Cleary still had 13 kills, with Li contributing 10 kills. Kieran Egan earned five kills as Duggal passed out 31 assists and Aden Pollock had 16 digs. LVA’s Matt Rudinsky’s 47 assists went equally to Jacob Mazur (14 kills), Tim Plewak (13 kills) and Riddick Robinson (12 kills).
Away from all this, East Syracuse Minoa met Oswego last Tuesday night, dropping the first two sets 25-18 and 25-22, but then grabbing the third set 25-18 before the Buccaneers closed it out, 25-21, in the fourth.
Ben Clappin put away 17 kills for the Spartans, with Aiden Betts getting eight kills and three aces and Cole Thomas seven kills, plus 10 digs. Jacob Franklin earned 27 assists and Jacob Sehn added 15 digs.
ESM rebounded on Thursday with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-11 romp over Central Square to improve its overall record to 2-4.
Jayce Dormes, with four aces, set the tone as Thomas got three aces to go with eight kills, eight digs and three blocks. Betts and Clappin both got 10 kills, with Domres and Sehn each earning 10 digs and Franklin amassing 28 assists.
