CENTRAL NEW YORK – Amid a busy week of area high school girls tennis, Skaneateles carried a 4-0 record into last Wednesday’s match against fellow unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy at Austin Park, only to have the match rained out and rescheduled two weeks later, on Sept. 30.
Prior to this, the Lakers had handled Bishop Grimes 7-0 last Monday, with three doubles matches forfeited and a singles sweep by Kenna Ellis, Lily Miller and Isabelle Soderberg. Ellis had the closest match, but still handled the Cobras’ Sofia Ziankoski 6-3, 6-0.
And after the CBA rainout, Skaneateles got to play on Friday, against Jordan-Elbridge, and turned away the Eagles by that same 7-0 margin.
Ellis and Miller each won 6-0, 6-0 matches over, respectively, Lizzie Conrad and Mary McGinn. And the doubles teams of Ella Danforth-Sophia Soderberg, Sofia Capozza-Rachel Hackler, Kelsey Rutledge-Emma Whipple and Bella Karpinski-Kate Kissel lost just one game in eight total sets.
J-E had started its week with a 6-1 loss to Homer, the Eagles only breaking the shutout when Anisa Bort, in first singles, worked past Emma Effinger 6-4, 6-2. Over in doubles, Leah Dixon and Madelyn Mott got to a third set in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 defeat to Molly Gallagher and Georgia Wallis.
West Genesee had a successful start to its week by topping Liverpool 5-2. Amid a singles sweep, Katie Viau held off Angelica Underwood 7-6, 6-3, with Katie Viau topping Gabby Underwood 7-6, 6-4 and Isabelle Wells romping past Meghan Bell 6-0, 6-2.
The teams of Kayla Latone-Margaret Mello and Ava Amodio-Hannah Sparks both lost close three-set matches, but Angelina Allen and Calina Olson outlasted Kelly Geiwitz and Jasmine Rawda 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 as Helena Allen and Kailyn Drury beat Maiya Fitzgibbons and Ashleigh Rosen 6-0, 6-3.
A 7-0 shutout of Henninger followed on Thursday, with the Wildcats not dropping a set in any of the matches. Angelina Allen, in singles, beat Samarra Tigner 6-2, 6-0, with Latone topping Esraa Al Masalmeh 6-1, 6-0 and Helena Allen taking a 6-0, 6-0 win over Kristen Nguyen.
WG also won 7-0 over Nottingham on Friday, again seeing Latone, Angelina Allen and Helena Allen take their turns in singles and drop just two games in six total sets.
Marcellus was humbled last Monday in a 7-0 defeat to CBA, unable to earn a point or a set in any of the matches. Only Kara Wangsness got games in singles, taking a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Rowan Doyle, while the closest doubles match had Sophie Clarke and Grace Rynkiewicz falling to Audrey Schaefer and Meredith Sommers 6-3, 6-2.
Rebounding on Friday, Marcellus took out Westhill 6-1, with Vetsch earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 singles decision over Bridget Thornton as Danielle Copp topped Katie Hagrman 6-1, 6-0 and Lila Kelly held off Mia Doss 7-5, 7-5.
In doubles, the Warriors got its lone point when Rachel Colucci and Hannah Johnston topped Izzy Ippoliti and Ella Lutwin 7-5, 2-6, 10-2. Otherwise, the Mustangs’ teams of Korinne Kemp-Claire Wrona, Wangness-Sydney Colon and Sophie Clarke-Shaelyn Kelly each prevailed in straight stes.
Prior to this, Westhill fought off Manlius-Pebble Hill 4-3 last Monday, with Doss and Hagrman both winning in singles and the doubles teams of Isabella Johnston-Kathleen Rogers and Hannah Johnston-Marisa Rosati each prevailing in straight sets. Doss beat Ileanna Anghel 6-0, 6-0 as Hagrman topped Caroline Mezzalingua 6-0, 6-3.
