BALDWINSVILLE – In the longest and shortest races of her 2021 home opener, Baldwinwsville girls swimmer Eva Smith again proved difficult to beat.
Even though the Bees fell 58-32 to Skaneateles last Tuesday at the Baker High School pool, Smith continued to display her versatility, winning two different races than the ones she claimed at Auburn on Sept. 8.
First, Smith went 25.26 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle to edge the 25.63 put up by the Lakers’ Hana Spaulding. Then, in the 500 freestyle, Smith pulled away for a top time of 5:16.45, half a minute ahead of Skaneateles’ Ariana Matthews, who posted 5:47.75.
Ashley Konz also won twice for B’ville, going 2:32.24 in the 200 medley relay to hold off the Lakers’ Lili Winkelman (2:36.62) before going to her specialty, the 100 backstroke, and winning in a quick 1:02.52.
Leading Skaneateles, Hana Spaulding tore to a time of 1:55.55 in the 200 freestyle and also prevailed in the 100 freestyle in 53.33 seconds.
B’ville would swim twice this week, going to Liverpool Tuesday before returning home Thursday to face West Genesee.
