UTICA – No one in the regular season would top the Jamesville-DeWitt and Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis teams in the regular season – and no one would in the post-season, either.
The Red Rams went first seeking post-season glory, ultimately earning the Section III Class B championship Wednesday at Utica Parkway Courts by picking up 57 points and winning two of the three singles divisions.
In first singles, Essex Glowaki never lost a set. Only having to play two matches thanks to a quarterfinal bye, Glowaki topped Homer’s Spencer Rusyniak 6-1, 6-0 and worked a bit longer in the final against New Hartford’s David Fenner, but still claimed a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Mark Bratslavsky had a similar path to the second singles title, blanking Josh Bouler (Chittenango) 6-0, 6-0 and handling Harley Wakeman (Mexico) 6-2, 6-0 before winning the final 6-3, 6-4 over Onondaga-Westhill’s Shay Smyth.
And in third singles, Cooper Werner nearly made it a sweep, handling Mexico’s Adam Clark 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals, only to drop the championship match to Oneida’s Spencer Ingmire 6-2, 6-4.
J-D had both of its doubles teams each reach the semifinals before getting stopped. Mike Bratslavsky and Luke Cantone competed in first doubles, while Nathan Chen and Ryan Collins worked in second doubles.
The Class A sectional tournament on Thursday saw F-M again finish atop the team standings on the basis of winning three of the five divisions, one at the expense of Christian Brothers Academy.
It was in second singles that the Hornets’ Cameron Lukasik defeated the Brothers’ Soren Kang in the finals. Prior to that, Lukasik had dropped just one game against Matt Humphrey (Auburn) and Eric Smith (Baldwinsville) as Kang topped Gaynay Doo (Utica Proctor) 6-1, 6-3 before a 7-5, 6-3 semifinal win over Central Square’s Kevin Kershner.
Fergus Brady won third singles for F-M. As the no. 2 seed, Brady beat CBA’s Chris Cuomo 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, handled Matt Marvel (Utica Proctor) 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals and had little trouble with West Genesee’s Ben Paoli, claiming the final 6-1, 6-3.
In second doubles, the Hornets’ Ben Farber-McEntee and Andy Sun dropped just two games in four sets on the way to the final, winning identical 6-1, 6-0 matches over Leo Mann-Dezmond McCurty (Syracuse) and Mason Doan-Leonardo Vona (B’ville) before taking the title match 6-3, 6-2 over Cicero-North Syracuse’s duo of Ethan and Wyatt Dupell.
Meanwhile, Jaden Duggal and Davin Woolridge finished third in first doubles, dropping a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 semifinal to B’ville’s Max Funicello and Nick Licciardello before winning 6-4, 6-1 over C-NS’s Ryan Hill and Brandon Millias.
Where F-M didn’t contend was in first singles, where CBA’s Ben Vlassis rolled to the title.
Vlassis, the top seed, had a bye straight into the semifinals, where he beat Central Square’s Ethan Westfall 6-1, 6-0, leading to a title match where he won 6-2, 6-3 over B’ville’s Antonio Marsallo, who had knocked off the Hornets’ David Fernando 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.
CBA also had Caleb Buddie and Finn Doyle drop a quarterfinal match in second doubles, while Fabrizio Arezzo and Will Vandemeer lose in the opening round of first doubles.
In the sectional Class C-1 tournament, Manlius-Pebble Hill’s Kai Hokanson beat Holland Patent’s Jeff Dewar 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second singles final before he lost, 6-1, 6-2 to Cazenovia’s Aiden Katleski. The Trojans’ Alex Fung lost in the opening round.
