ONONDAGA COUNTY – Girls lacrosse teams from Jamesville-DeWitt and Fayetteville-Manlius would attempt this week to defend their respective Section III titles, while not expected to do so.
J-D’s status was based on two defeats to Fulton, but it had done well against all its other league foes.
On May 27, J-D bashed Cortland 20-3, with Everly Kessler getting five goals as Kailey McKenna, Lily Loewenguth and Kate Wilcox had three goals apiece, McKenna getting four assists and Loewenguth three assists.
Lindsey Hildreth and Sydney Balotin were close behind, each finding the net twice. Kate Barclay had one goal and one assist and Brooke Bort added a single goal.
Then, in its May 29 game against West Genesee, J-D led 11-10 with less than nine minutes left, only to see the Wildcats take over late and prevail 14-11 over the Rams.
Loewenguth put up four goals, with McKenna getting three goals and two assists. Kessler and Hildreth both scored twice, Kessler adding two assist, and the Rams lost despite Skyler Constantino’s 17 saves.
Back in action nearly a week later, J-D beat Central Square 16-6, led by Loewenguth’s four goals. Kessler scored three times, with Wilcox, Hildreth and McKenna netting two goals apiece and McKenna adding two assists.
As for F-M, it was staring up at an undefeated Auburn side, along with the knowledge that it had not quite got the best of all of its SCAC Metro division rivals.
The Hornets lost 15-12 to Liverpool on May 27 as the Warriors avenged a May 11 defeat to F-M. Ava Angello and Julianna Cogliandro each had four goals and one assist, while Lillian Coleman scored three times. Victoria Horton added a goal and Melanie Steigerwald got two assists.
Battling Baldwinsville last Tuesday, F-M again had a great effort, even taking a 6-5 lead to halftime, but unable to hang on late as it fell 13-10 to the Bees.
Angello and Coglinadro both got three goals, with Coleman earning two goals and three assists. Halle Daino also scored twice as Hannah Madden and Ellrose Hanlon had single assists.
In F-M’s game against West Genesee last Thursday, it was close for a while, but the Hornets fell to the Wildcats 12-6. Only Cogliandro scored twice, with Steigerwald, Coleman, Horton and Grace Reyna earning one goal apiece.
Playing again on Saturday, F-M lost a rematch with Liverpool 15-11, seeing Angello net four goals and Cogliandro get three goals as Daino converted twice. Margaret Tifft (five goals, one assist) and Kendra Hall (four goals, two assists) led the Warriors.
Up in the Class A ranks, Christian Brothers Academy had played opponents close, but had not beat them, and it took another hit on May 27 when it lost 15-10 to Homer.
Down 8-5 at halftime, the Brothers could not make up the ground despite Bella Roberson’s five goals. Amelia Bonacci scored twice as Gracie Britton, Bella DeRegis and Lilah Kirch had the other goals. Camryn Calabro (five goals, two assists), Katlyn Sovocool and Kloey Roos (four goals each) accounted for most of the Trojans’ production.
CBA did beat Marcellus 17-9 last Tuesday, led again by Roberson, who scored six times Goldberg had four goals and one assist, with Maeve Mackenzie stepping up to earn three goals and two assists. Britton, Bonacci and Bella Cannizzo each had one goal and one assist.
Then CBA ran up against Class D power South Jefferson on Friday and took a 19-3 defeat to the Spartans, who got six goals from Jordyn Badalato and five goals from Karsyn Burnash.
East Syracuse Minoa had its own game against Fulton on May 28 and lost, 17-2, to the Red Raiders, the lone goals coming from Emma Biel, one in each half. Emma Weaver (five goals) and Alexa Patterson (four goals, five assists) set the pace for Fulton.
But the Spartans did beat Syracuse 18-7 on Thursday, with seven goals from Biel as Rileigh White piled up four goals and four assists. Julianna Barton had three goals as Meghan Filmer, Kathryn Andrus and Rylyn Commisso each had one goal and one assist.
On Tuesday, ESM, as the no. 4 seed in the sectional Class A bracket, would face no. 5 seed Central Square, battling for a spot against top seed Auburn in one semifinal as F-M, the no. 2 seed, plays no. 3 seed Watertown in the other semifinal.
J-D would also play Tuesday as the no. 3 seed in Class C against no. 6 seed Whitesboro, the winner to face no. 2 seed Homer in the semifinals, just as CBA, the no. 4 seed in Class A, looked to beat no. 5 seed Rome Free Academy with a place in the semifinals against top seed Baldwinsville on the line.
