CENTRAL NEW YORK – Prior to last week, the combined Onondaga-Westhill boys tennis team had not lost in any of its first five matches.
Only when the Warriors faced Christian Brothers Academy did that change as the Brothers won this clash of undefeated sides last Monday, prevailing by a 4-1 margin.
Then, two days later, it was Skaneateles getting its turn against the Warriors and winning by that same 4-1 margin to move up the OHSL Liberty division standings.
Both doubles matches went to the Lakers, with Hatcher Gutchess and Andrew Neumann rolling past Harshdeep Banga and Angelo Carr 6-1, 6-2 as Parker Glowacki and Mirco Kunz won 6-1, 6-1 over Sophia Featherstone and Nate Hay.
OCS-Westhill got on the board in second singles when Shay Smyth blanked Duncan Raddant 6-0, 6-0, but Skaneateles countered with Marcus McClanahan routing Jon Massaro 6-1, 6-1 and Marty McNeil beating Paul Okhman 6-0, 6-1
Before this, Skaneateles proved successful in last Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Homer, claiming both doubles matches to go with Marc Sapareto’s 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 singles victory over Jake Camp.
Glowacki and Kunz prevailed over Nik Kruman and Elijah Smith 6-2, 6-1, while Raddant and Trevor Knupp romped past Jackson Henderson and Brendon McLaughlin 6-1, 6-1. Neumann could not hold on to an early lead in a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 loss to Raymond Meng.
This gave Skaneateles a chance at the top of the OHSL Liberty division standings if it could beat Cazenovia on Friday, but it was the other Lakers who prevailed 3-2 to secure the regular-season league title.
In doubles, Gutchess and Neumann topped Lincoln Katleski and Garret Lounsbury 6-4, 6-1, with Knupp and Raddant topping Andrew Falso and Carter Ruddy 6-1, 7-5. Yet Cazenovia won all three singles matches in straight sets, the closest of them McNeil’s 6-3, 6-4 loss to Jake Wardel.
Against CBA, The lone point for OCS-Westhill came when Smyth beat Soren Kanh 6-2, 6-3. Massaro and Okhman both dropped singles matches in straight sets, as did the doubles teams of Banga-Carr and Featherstone-Hay.
West Genesee began last week’s action by facing Cicero-North Syracuse, and only earning a couple of points in a 5-2 defeat to the Northstars.
Matt Mannara and Noah Ruston paired in doubles to beat Ryan Hill and Brandon Millias 6-2, 6-1, with Cade Duda and Alex Toumbacaris topping Joe DeGroat and Brandon Nguyen 6-4, 6-2. But WG lost all the singles matches, one of them a forfeit, and had Dan Good and Ben Paoli take a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 loss to Ethan and Wyatt Dupell.
Marcellus would take a 3-2 defeat to Chittenango last Monday afternoon, with both of the Mustangs’ points coming in singles as Chris Barbaro beat Luke Dahlin 6-2, 6-4 and Matt Vitale got a 6-3, 6-2 win over Josh Boulter.
Though he got close to a first-set win, Dan Fox fell 7-5, 6-3 to Micah Alperuto, and the Bears claimed both doubles points as the teams of Austin Voss-Tyler Szalach and Mike Deveroux-Tyler Guerina both took defeats.
Turning this around on Wednesday, Marcellus won 4-1 over LaFayette, with Szalach and Voss beating Lindsay Carroll and Ben Haskins 6-3, 6-0 as Deveroux and Guerina got a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Jennifer Post and Jenna Reese.
Up in singles, Fox lost 6-3, 6-4 to Hunter Matorella, but Barbaro pulled out a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 decision over Mason Shute in first singles and Vitale handled Paul Coon 6-1, 6-1.
Then, in a 3-2 defeat to Cazenovia on Thursday, Vitale beat Jake Wardel 7-6, 6-1, while Deveroux and Guerina pulled out a 6-1, 1-6, 11-9 doubles win over Tristan Alvisi and Lincoln Katleski, but the Lakers took the other three matches in straight sets. A 4-0 defeat to CBA followed on Friday afternoon.
