ONONDAGA COUNTY – With each successful match, the Liverpool girls golf team inched closer to long-awaited glory, even though it had to earn every bit of it.
Against Cicero-North Syracuse Blue last Tuesday at Hickory Hills, both sides played quite well, but the Warriors still had enough to fend off the Northstars 153-161.
The teams were on even terms except at the top, where again the Avotins sisters led the way for Liverpool, Nataly Avotins shooting a 31 for nine holes and Mia Avotins posting a 33.
C-NS Blue got two 36s from Jessica Ricciardi and Ava Mazzoli, with Isabella Borte shooting 43 and Natalie Hacker adding a 46. But the Warriors held on thanks to a 43 from Mackenzie Cahl and a 47 from Jewel Daniels.
Now came Liverpool’s rematch with Fayetteville-Manlius Green on Thursday. Having beat the Hornets April 30 at Green Lakes, the Warriors expected another battle – and managed to win again, edging the Hornets 146-149.
Individually, it was Mia Avotins getting the 29 that edged the 30 from F-M Green’s Lucy Fowler as Nataly Avotins finished with a 31.
With Michaela Papa shooting a 38 and Madison Krouse a 40 for the Hornets, Liverpool needed Daniels to shoot 41 and two 45s from Cahl and Ella Foriero to clinch the victory.
Liverpool went to Green Lakes on Friday to face F-M’s other team, the White squad, and rolled to a 180-220 victory to move its record to 9-0.
Here it was Mia Aovtins putting up a 36 and Nataly Avotins adding a 40, while Daniels completed a top-three sweep by shooting 49. Adrianna Shaw put up a 55.
Back on Monday, C-NS Green hosted F-M White at Northern Pines and took a 223-231 defeat to the younger group of Hornets.
Mackenzie Wessels’ 54 was five shots behind F-M White’s Lucia Mefli, while Ashley Evans had a 55, Andrea Wheaton tied for fourth with a 57 and Josephine Gabriell picked up a 60.
In Wednesday’s 230-241 loss to West Genesee at Northern Pines, Evans’ 60 trailed three Wildcats, who were led by Sophia Simiele’s 53 and Maria Bove’s 55. Wessels and Gabriell both posted 63 and Wheaton shot 65.
When C-NS Blue met WG on Thursday, it avenged an earlier defeat to the Wildcats, prevailing 199-219 aided by a top-three individual sweep.
Not only did Ricciardi’s 45 take individual honors, she got help from Borte (49) and Hacker (50) who both topped Bove’s 53 as Emilee Solak clinched the win with a 55.
