CENTRAL NEW YORK – With each game, and each victory, the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team served more reminders of just how good it remained, no matter who it was facing.
Against a Homer side that flew out to a 2-0 start last Monday night, the Lakers jumped all over the Trojans, leading 12-2 by halftime on the way to a 15-5 win.
Ava Logan set the tone, ultimately outscoring Homer by herself as she finished with a career-best six goals, helped by Bella Brogan and Anna McGlynn, who each had three goals and one assist.
Kathryn Morrissey had a goal and three assists, with Lilly Marquardt getting a goal and two assists. Rachel Hackler added a goal and Kelsey Rutledge got an assist.
It was followed on Thursday by Sknaeateles nearly blanking Chittenango in a 16-1 decision, made more impressive by the fact that 13 different players netted a goal by game’s end.
Only Hackler, Maggie Newton and Alison Whipple scored twice. Logan, Rutledge and Elizabeth Wamp each had one goal and one assist, with Brogan, Emily Huttar, Maeve McNeil, Makenzie Miller, Julia O’Connor and Campbell Torrey also picking up goals.
Skaneateles kept it up on Saturday by bashing Watertown 17-1, netting 11 unanswered goals in the first half as Morrissey got four goals and O’Connor added a three-goal hat trick.
Hackler gained two goals and two assists, with Brogan and Rory Comer also finding the net twice. Newton augmented her single goal with four assists as Logan, Rutledge and McGlynn also converted.
Westhill, who had lost to Skaneateles on May 6, took a 12-7 defeat to Liverpool last Monday that was the first victory of the season for that other group of Warriors, who had started 0-5.
Gianna Zerillo had three goals, with Katy McPeak and Rosemary Mahoney both getting two goals and one assist. Grace Winkler added two assists and Frankie Argentieri had seven saves as Jenna Irwin (four goals) and Mia Berthoff (three goals) led Liverpool’s effort.
Rebounding a night later, Westhill handled Cazenovia 18-7, with Winkler’s four goals pacing a deep and far more balanced attack.
Mahoney scored three times as McPeak, Bella Sampo, Adelaide Lowery and Karly Dillobaugh each found the net twice. Zerillo didn’t get a goal, but earned three assists as Claire Hunter, Sophia Caron and Nicolette Albert landed single goals.
Westhill challenged itself against reigning sectional Class A champion Baldwinsville on Saturday and played a superb first half, slowing down the tempo and leading 3-2 at the break.
But the Bees took over after intermission and won 11-4, with Jaedyn Frink’s three goals at the forefront. Winkler netted two of the Warriors’ four goals, with the others going to Lowery and McPeak.
Jordan-Elbridge again got a big performance from Gabrielle Gunnip in last Tuesday’s game against Chittenango/Bishop Grimes, all part of the Eagles’ 16-10 victory over the Bears.
Gunnip finished with eight goals, helped in no small part by Ireland Hill, who scored four times and added an assist. Riley Crawford got four assists as Clara Derby and Makayla Penird both had one goal and one assist. Brooke Tanner also scored for J-E.
On Thursday night, J-E fell to Christian Brothers Academy 18-8. Gunnip managed seven of the Eagles’ eight goals, but five different CBA players had multiple tallies, led by Gracie Britton’s three goals and five assists as Amelia Bonacci and Bella Roberson both got four goals and two assists.
