ONONDAGA COUNTY – When the gloomy weather finally cleared up, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool boys tennis teams entered their busiest stretch of the season, starting with a match against each other.
The Northstars got the best of it, topping the Warriors 6-1 to improve to 1-1 overall after it had lost its season opener by that same margin to Fayetteville-Manlius on May 7.
Sweeping in doubles, C-NS got going when Ryan Hill and Brandon Millias beat Brandon Davis and Shohbit Sharma 6-2, 6-4, with Ethan Dupell and William Janusz handling Aiden Barbour and Adam Ritter 6-1, 6-2.
Also in straight sets, the Northstars had Alex Cao and Brady Petanchuk win 6-3, 6-0 over Aiden Hunter and James Welch as Joe DeGroat and Brandon Nguyen beat Evan Miller and Bobby Williams 6-3, 6-2.
Liverpool’s lone point came in singles, where Cole Petrzeba topped Matt Jordan 6-0, 6-2. But C-NS countered with Wyatt Dupell’s 6-2, 6-0 win over Evan Prosser and Jamie Courtright blanking Adam Reiter 6-0, 6-0.
Against F-M, Wyatt Dupell had gained C-NS’s lone point by a default. All the other matches were lost in straight sets except a doubles battle where Ryan Hill and Brandon Millias went to a third set against the Hornets’ Ben Farber-McEntee and Andy Sun, only to take a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 defeat.
Right after beating Liverpool, C-NS looked for the same kind of success against Baldwinsville, but were kept off the board in a 7-0 defeat to the Bees.
Jordan and Wyatt Dupell both lost in singles, with Coutright finding some success, yet falling to Connor Tutor 6-3, 6-4, while each of the four doubles matches required just two sets, Hill and Millias losing to Max Funicello and Nick Licciardello 6-3, 6-2 as Janusz and Ethan Dupell lost 6-2, 6-3 to Mason Doan and Leonardo Vona.
In its third match in as many days, C-NS found plenty of doubles success against West Genesee, but could not make a dent in singles, leading to a 4-3 loss to the Wildcats.
Hill and Millias handled Sam Barth and Cade Duda 6-1, 6-1 in first doubles, while Cao and Petanchuk won 6-3, 7-6 over Petar Sikovski and Denys Tsymbala.
In three sets, DeGroat and Nguyen rallied past Joe Paoli and Alex Toumbacaris 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, but Janusz and Ethan Dupell lost in two sets while, in singles, Courtright fell to Ben Paoli 6-2, 6-3 and Wyatt Dupell had a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Matt Mannara. Jordan lost 6-0, 6-1 to Noah Ruston.
