ONONDAGA COUNTY – With the best weather it had faced so far this spring area high school girls and boys golf teams were busy throughout the week, both head-to-head and in tournament competition.
Christian Brothers Academy had climbed to the top of the Onondaga High School League standings with a 5-0 start, and made it six in a row last Monday by topping Westhill 198-211 at Camillus Golf Club.
Annie Kilmartin’s nine-hole 42 was the low round by seven strokes. Aubrey Mills, with a 49, and Hanna Kang, with a 50, completed a top-three sweep ahead of Westhill’s Maya Wollen (51) as McKenna Shutz put up a 57.
Back at Drumlins a day later to face 4-1 Marcellus, CBA pulled out a 210-225 victory amid cold, windy conditions that brought the scores up.
Kilmartin still led the way, her 49 two shots ahead of Kang’s 51 and both topping the 53 from the Mustangs’ Bronte Stahl as Shutz shot a 54. Bella Meade chimed in with a 56, one ahead of Victoria English and Anya McGillivray.
CBA kept it up Thursday by topping Manlius-Pebble Hill 187-204 at Lyndon, with Kilmartin’s 45 one ahead of Mills and Meade and two clear of Jane Walsh as the Trojans got a 50 from Parmees Fazeli, a 51 from Amitees Fazeli and a 53 from Caroline Mezzalingua.
Then, on Friday, CBA won a rematch with MPH 221-239 at Drumlins. Amitees Fazeli won individual honors with a 41, only to have Kang get a 47 and Kilmartin a 51 ahead of Parmees Fazeli’s 52. English contributed a 56.
Fayetteville-Manlius Green, chasing Liverpool atop the SCAC Metro division standings, finally got a chance to play a full nine holes at Green Lakes last Monday and promptly handled Cicero-North Syracuse Green 201-264.
Again leading the Hornets, Lucy Fowler shot a 39, with Madison Krouse getting to second place by posting a 51. Kristen Truman, with a 55, was one ahead of 56s by Michaela Papa and Alana Isley as Ava Abruzzese added a 61.
That chase was harmed Thursday at Timber Banks, when F-M Green lost 187-192 to Baldwinsville.
Fowler’s 38 was the best individual round, but the Bees’ Margaret Dec had a 41 and Colleen Vredenburg a 47. Papa and Isley both posted 49, with Abruzzese adding a 56, but Jessica Bilynsky’s 49 and Cara Vredenburg’s 50 helped the Bees hang on.
F-M White played on Friday and lost, 192-221, to C-NS Blue. Caelen Murphy’s 48 beat out Lucia Melfi’s 49 for low individual round by the Hornets as Sydney Hines and Gabriella Dardis both shot 57.
Bishop Grimes had the low round from Sarah Falgiatano in last Monday’s match against Skaneateles with a 50, even though the Lakers prevailed 242-261 led by a 51 from Julia Marshall.
In a closer match on Thursday, Grimes lost 222-229 to Westhill, where Falgiatano, with a 48, tied for low honors with the Warriors’ Bella Jones. Ashley Ince shot a 58, two ahead of Lexi Emmi as Abby Tweedale had a 63.
CBA’s boys team, which had competed in the fall, returned last Monday for the Onondadga High School League Tournament at Vesper Hills in Tully and nearly won it.
With a team total of 334, the Brothers only trailed Skaneateles, who won with 333, but did have Joe Nicholson share individual honors with Cazenovia’s Alex Moesch, each of them shooting 76 in cool conditions.
As for Manlius-Pebble Hill, the Trojans moved to 3-0 by handling Syracuse City 210-271 last Monday, with Tommy Wildhack’s 37 just ahead of the 38 from Syracuse’s George Chesna. Jack Marquardt shot a 42 and James Wildhack got a 43.
Then MPH routed Bishop Grimes 203-297 on Thursday as Johnny Gruninger returned to shoot a 33, while Marquardt got a 37 and Tommy Wildhack a 41 ahead of the 44 by the Cobras’ Steve Filapello.
