CENTRAL NEW YORK – During the first Wednesday of May, a handful of area high school track and field teams braved chilly, wet conditions and, in one instance faced another.
That was the case with Jordan-Elbridge taking on Solvay, and the Eagles won both sides of this meet, prevailing 70-30 in the boys meet and handling the Bearcats 86-40 in the girls meet.
Peyton Bates was a standout in the boys meet, sweeping all of the distance races as he covered 800 meters in two minutes, 36.9 seconds, won the 1,600 in 5:54.0 and the 3,200 in 12:51.0.
Meanwhile, Nolan Jackson got first in both the 110 high hurdles (18.1 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:21.0), adding a long jump title by going 18 fet 4 inches.
J-E’s Cameron Newhook threw the discus 86’8” as Solvay’s Allen Knight Cawthon claimed both the 100-meter dash in 11.3 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 1:03.3, with Brandon Burke clearing 5’2” in the high jump.
In the girls meet, the Eagles’ Kyler Langhorn won three events, going 13.4 seconds in the 100 sprint while also getting a long jump of 15’5” and a triple jump of 30’9”.
Vassi Klock gained first in both the 800 (2:37.9) and 1,500 (5:49.9) distance events as Hannah Fichter went 13:16.5 in the 3,000. Coral Uhle took first in the 400 sprint in 1:06.5.
Tatianna Parkolap (400 hurdles, 1:39.9) and Jazmyn Stevenson (200, 28.8 seconds) also got wins as the Bearcats saw Jessie Mann take the shot put and Alie Dooher finish first in the 100 hurdles.
West Genesee had its girls track team earn its first victory of the season, following up a loss to Liverpool by toppling the Nottingham Bulldogs 90-39.
Alexis Rydelek threw the discus 68’7” and the shot put 26’5” to win both events, while Lauren Puchta, who had a top long jump of 12’5 1/2”, also ran to first in the 3,000 in 12:22.3.
Anna Caruso topped 4’8” in the high jump before she finished first in the triple jump with 23’7 1/2”. Alana Eastman claimed first in the 1,500 in 5:51.9 as Molly Scott won the 800 in 2:53.9, while the Wildcats swept the 4×100 (55.9 seconds), 4×400 (4:53.3) and 4×800 (12:07.9) relays.
When WG’s boys beat Nottingham, Peter McMahon ran the 800 in 2:09.9 and the 1,600 in 4:41.0 as Brandon Scott had a triple jump of 36’8 1/4” and ran the 200 in 24.1 seconds.
James Mungro III ran the 400 sprint in 55.5 seconds and cleared 5’2” in the high jump, with Dominick Burns going 11.8 seconds in the 100 sprint, Bryan Reichert taking the 110 hurdles and Jonah Grothier first in the shot put.
Each of the Skaneateles track and field teams faced their first big tests when they traveled to Buckley-Volo Field last Tuesday to face its fellow Lakers from Cazenovia, with Living Word Academy also taking part.
In the boys meet, where Skaneateles lost 96.5-44.5, Caleb Bender still tore to a time of 4:28 in the mile to beat Cazenovia’s Jared Smith, who set a school record with his second-place 4:34.54.
Max Persampieri cleared 5’8” in the high jump, with Ben Euto throwing the shot put 39’3 1/2”. Max Paciorek took first in the 110 hurdles in 18.7 seconds as Bender, Matt Persampieri, Joe Norris and Will Girzadas were first in the 4×800 relay a time of 8:59.6.
The Skaneateles girls challenged Cazenovia and lost, 107-34, to those other Lakers despite Lily Colman’s 30’2” in the triple jump and a time of 5:28 in the 1,500 as she also went 2:37.8 in the 800. Alice Spaulding threw the shot put 24’11”.
