ONONDAGA COUNTY – Back in the spring of 2019, Liverpool girls golfers Mia and Nataly Avotins were among the top performers in Section III, neither of them imagining how long it would take to face high school competition again.
When the wait finally ended late in April, the Avotins sisters, now seniors, were at the forefront of a Warriors squad adjusting to a new home course – Hickory Hills – and flourishing in the early stages of the 2021 season.
And no performance was bigger than last Friday’s 119-124 victory over Fayetteville-Manlius Green at a shortened Green Lakes course, where Liverpool proved that it had more depth than in seasons past.
Mia Avotins had the low round of 24 and Nataly Avotins got a 26 to finish third, with the Hornets’ Lucy Fowler in between them as she finished with a 25.
It took Ella Foriero shooting a 33, Adrianna Shaw earning a 36 and Jewel Daniels getting a 40 to help the Warriors hold off F-M Green, who still got matching 32s from Alana Isley and Michaela Papa.
The April 23 opener saw Liverpool rout West Genesee 158-213 with Mia Avotins managing a nine-hole score of 33 and Nataly Avotins putting up a 36.
In all, the Warriors had the four best rounds, with Shaw getting a 43 and Mackenzie Cahl a 46 in front of the Wildcats’ low round of 47 from Maria Bove.
Then Liverpool faced Cicero-North Syracuse Blue last Monday at Northern Pines and won again, 192-205, and this time Nataly Avotins led the way shooting a 36.
Mia Avotins’ 40 beat the 47 from the Northstars’ Jessica Ricciardi as Shaw and Foriero both put up 58, which was matched by C-NS Blue’s Natalie Hacker. Isabella Borte (59) and Emilee Solak (61) were close behind.
