ONONDAGA COUNTY – Each of the area’s high schools has put together a girls golf team for the 2021 season and, in the case of powerful Fayetteville-Manlius, it again will field a Green and White side.
Most of the Hornets’ opening-week matches were postponed, but F-M Green did get to play on Friday on a shortened Green Lakes course against Liverpool, who was off to a 2-0 start.
Proving that it could compete with the long-time front-runners, the Warriors beat the Hornets 119-124, led by Mia Avotins’ 24 and Nataly Avotins’ 26 which bridged the 25 shot by F-M Green’s Lucy Fowler.
Alana Isley and Michaela Papa both finished with 32, while Georgia Perry had a 35. Madison Krouse and Kristen Truman each shot 36, but the Warriors won helped by a 33 from Ella Foriero and 36 from Adrianna Shaw.
The rain on Thursday did not keep Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa from beginning their seasons together, where they will stay for the rest of the spring.
Each of the maches for the Red Rams and Spartans involves all the teams in the SCAC Empire division, with the two sides joined by Auburn, Central Square, Oswego and Fulton, with each match taking part on a different home course of one of the sides.
In this case, the match was at Tecumseh Golf Course, where J-D, with a 206, finished just ahead of ESM Blue’s total of 212 and ESM Orange had a team score of 253.
The Red Rams’ Sophia Ferris and the Spartans’ Isabelle Chavoustie both shot 45 for nine holes, tying for second individually behind the 37 from Central Square’s Emily Barnes. Jaeda Robinson added a 47 for the Rams to tie for fifth.
Christian Brothers Academy made a successful return last Tuesday when it traveled west and beat Skaneateles 217-248, the Brothers led by Annie Kilmartin, who shot a 49 at Skaneateles Country Club.
As for Bishop Grimes, it opened last Tuesday against Marcellus at Tuscarora Golf Club, where Sarah Falgiatano posted the low round of 49, six better than the 55 from the Mustangs’ Bronte Stahl.
Still, the Cobras lost, 244-252, because four Marcellus golfers overall shot 64 or lower, contrasting with Grimes, who had a 66 from Lexi Emmi, a 68 from Abby Tweedale and a 69 from Ashley Ince.
Several other matches for all of the area’s teams got rained out late in the week, leading to a more crowded schedule throughout May.
