CENTRAL NEW YORK – The long, excruciating wait to see high school lacrosse in Central New York finally ended last week, even if both teams from Cazenovia wish it had gone better.
Right away, the boys Lakers saw weather interrupt its plans, since it was supposed to host Christian Brothers Academy last Thursday at the Sean Googin Sports Complex.
But mid-week rains changed the itinerary and the game was moved to CBA’s home turf at Alibrandi Stadium, where Cazenovia would struggle plenty in a 15-4 defeat to the Brothers.
They were close for a while, the game 1-1 going into the second quarter before CBA went in front for good. Still, it was just 4-2 at halftime before long possessions by the Brothers wore the Lakers’ defense down.
Cody Dickinson ended up netting three of Cazenovia’s four goals. Gannon Houghton had the other, with Jack Wright getting an assist.
The Brothers had a well-balanced attack, led by Dan Ludington’s four goals and one assist as Joe Papa, Dan Anderson and Declan Landers had three goals apiece.
That same night, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team also opened against CBA and lost, 21-3, to a Brothers side which had lost its opener to Westhill earlier in the week.
Lily Sorbello scored twice for the Lakers, with Megan Kuhn getting a goal and assist. Katie Rajkowski added an assist as 10 different CBA players got goals, led by Gracie Britton, who had four goals and two assists.
Tough as this was, Cazenovia made quite the turnaround on Saturday at Oswego, roaring out to an 11-3 halftime advantage on the way to defeating the Buccaneers 17-10.
Sorbello again was tough to stop, notching five goals plus three assists. Julia Ketcham scored four times, adding an assist as Rajkowski had three goals and one assist.
Helping out, Carley Lounsbury and Maddie McGreevy both notched a pair of goals, while Kuhn had a goal and two assists. Mackenzie Halliday recorded four saves.
Back on Wednesday night, Chittenango had its boys lacrosse team open against Westhill, the Bears finding itself overwhelmed in a 20-7 defeat to the Warriors.
By himself, Westhill’s Will Delano matched Chittenango’s entire output, earning seven goals, while Griffin Grooms finished with five goals and one assist.
Bouncing back on Saturday, the Bears handled Jordan-Elbridge 16-5 on Saturday as Caleb Barnard, Ethan Robles and Brendon Barnard nabbed four goals apiece, with Caleb Barnard adding four assists. Brad Tily got two goals and one assist as Jack Lamphere and Bryson Weaver had the other goals.
Chittenango’s girls team, a combined entry with Bishop Grimes, lost its opener last Saturday to Jordan-Elbridge 16-15 in overtime, rallying from a 9-8 halftime deficit to get to the extra period but unable to convert there.
Julia Graham and Tomi Newkirk both had four goals for the Bears, Graham adding two assists. Brooke Walters and Caitlyn Sgambellone both scored twice, with Ashley O’Hara getting a goal and three assists as Cara Kielbasa had one goal and two assists.
