ONONDAGA COUNTY – From the swift times posted by Hana Spaulding to a series of pool and school records, the Skaneateles girls swim team did a lot of memorable things in this modified 2021 season.
And when the Lakers’ final opponent, Oswego, was unable to show up last Tuesday night, Skaneateles decided to take part in all of the races anyway, with the meet serving as an Onondaga High School League qualifier.
Spaulding would break the 24-second mark in the 50-yard freestyle, going 23.98 to beat out Ashley Drotar’s 24.94, and then tore to a time of 51.51 seconds in the 100 freestyle as Drotar again was runner-up in 55.05.
Grace King would put together a 200 freestyle time of 2:06.97 to beat out Elizabeth Springer’s 2:10.07 before turning to the 100 backstroke and pulling away to win in 1:06.73.
Ariana Matthews would dominate the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:31.38, this after she swam the 200 individual medley in 2:20.36 ahead of Lili Winkelman’s 2:24.93.
For her part, Winkelman earned first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.65 over the 1:17.94 from Caitlin Comer, while Amelia Musso went 1:06.61 in the 100 butterfly.
In the relays, Musso, Comer, Winkelman and Matthews went 2:04.28 in the 200 medley before Spaulding, King, Springer and Drotar tore to 1:40.18 in the 200 freestyle relay. And to cap it off, that same quartet of Spaulding, King, Springer nad Drotar would earn a time of 3:44.31 in the 400 freestyle relay.
On the diving board, Carlee Pitman, with 201.45 points, beat the 177.40 total of Lexi Cottrill, this following the April 17 Onondaga High School League meet where Pitman finished fourth with 347.30 points and Cottrill (323.55) was fifth as New Hartford’s Bella Kolb (400.30) was the winner.
That same day, the Salt City Athletic Conference diving meet took place and West Genesee’s Abbey Annable finished 11th with 241,35 points as Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kaitlyn Carroll (466.75 points) took the top spot.
WG then fell to Jamesville-DeWitt 98-88 last Tuesday night, despite Anna Ivery and Allison Putnam winning two races apiece.
Ivery went 25.47 seconds to take the 50 freestyle and, in 1:05.32, went 1-2 with Adriana Gill (1:17.21) in the 100 butterfly, while Putnam was first in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.18 and claimed the 500 freestyle in 5;36.57.
Allie Straub beat the field in the 100 backstroke in 1:15.37 as Ivery, Putnam, Gill and Mary Lyons roared to victory in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.67. Angie Guttschau joined Ivery, Putnam and Gill as WG won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:06.39.
