SYRACUSE – To finish its unique spring 2021 season, the Baldwinsville girls swim team went on the road for a pair of meets and would end up splitting the results.
B’ville first took on Fayetteville-Manlius last Wednesday night, taking an 81-78 defeat to the Hornets while Eva Smith and Ashley Konz continued to stand out.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Smith posted a time of two minutes, 1.82 seconds that easily cleared the 2:10.70 from F-M’s Grace Reyna, while Konz swam the 500 freestyle in 5:48.33 for first-place points.
Smith, in 57.57 seconds, was not far from the winning 56.41 by F-M’s Hannah Kellogg in the 100 freestyle as Madeline Sauro got a time of 1:09.79 to contend in the 100 backstroke.
Makenna Williams put up 1:33.54 in the 100 breaststroke as the Hornets featured Emma Luttrell going 59.89 seconds in the 100 butterfly and helping her side swim the 200 medley relay in 1:56.79, the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.50 and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:51.74.
And it led to Friday’s finale against Syracuse City at Nottingham High School, where B’ville earned its second win of the season, rallying late to earn an 89-87 victory.
With three races to go, the Bees trailed 70-60. Then it went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, Smith roaring to a time of 1:00.28 to beat out the 1:01.21 from Konz.
Then, after Williams finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.73), the Bees would go 1-2 in the closing 400 freestyle relay to pull ahead and win it, with the quartet of Konz, Sauro, Erin Gruppe and Henna Luke taking first place in 4:15.56.
Earlier in the meet, Sauro had prevailed twice, taking the 50 freestyle in 28.72 seconds with Kate Cornell second (29.32) as Sauro won the 100 freestyle in 1:03.46 and Gruppe (1:07.38) was second, to go with her runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:48.10.
Konz went 2:06.75 to prevail in the 200 freestyle, while Smith won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.66, this after Smith, Konz, Sauro and Williams were first in the 200 medley relay in 2:09.57. Luke took second in the 500 freestyle in 6:16.64.
