ONONDAGA COUNTY – Over the years, the girls volleyball rivalry between Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool has undergone many different phases where both sides have established control at one point or another.
At least in the first 2021 match between the two sides, it was all Northstars, who wasted little time putting away the Warriors last Tuesday afternoon in a three-set sweep.
Each of the first two sets was lopsided, C-NS taking them by scores of 25-13 and 25-14. Liverpool nearly forced the match to go further, but the Northstars claimed the third set 25-23 for the sweep.
Brooke Segars paced C-NS with six kills, 11 digs and four aces. Maddy Manz also had four aces as McKenna Johnston and Natalie Tice both produced a team-best nine kills.
Maddy Howell, with five kills, and Alita Santagelo, with three kills, helped out as Cassidy Ormond dished out 25 assists. Defensively, Hannah Mingle led the way with 15 digs.
As for the Warriors, Syd Vanterpool had five kills, with Emma Terzini getting three blocks as she and Lexi Carfi both earned four kills. Carfi got 11 assists and two aces as Addie Tanton had five digs and three assists.
From there, C-NS carried on to Thursday’s match against West Genesee, where it took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23 and absorbed a 25-21 defeat in the third set before taking out the Wildcats 25-19 in the fourth.
Ormond had 28 assists and Mingle piled up 24 digs. Segars and Manz had seven kills apiece, Segars adding 12 digs and Manz 10 digs as Santagelo and Howell each had five kills and Johnston four kills to go with seven digs.
Liverpool would struggle again in Thursday’s match against Baldwinsville, taking a 25-17, 25-14, 25-22 loss to the undefeated Bees.
Carfi still managed nine digs, six assists and two aces as Saeger picked up three kills. Eliana Page chimed in with six digs as B’ville’s Kyrah Wilbur got 15 kills and four blocks, Brooke Clute got nine kills and Jenna Garvey had 26 assists.
In Saturday’s action, C-NS swept Henninger 25-7, 25-14, 25-6 as Johnston led with seven kills and Segars added six kills. Manz added four kills as Ormond earned 13 assists and Mingle got seven digs.
When Liverpool went up against Fayetteville-Manlius that same afternoon, it lost in three sets to the Hornets, close in the first two sets but dropping them by equal 25-22 margins before a 25-17 third set.
