CENTRAL NEW YORK – In recent years, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team found some of its toughest competition when it had to go up against Westhill, winners of back-to-back state Class B championships in 2018 and 2019.
Though some time has passed, the Warriors remain quite formidable, as the Lakers found out last Tuesday afternoon when it lost in three sets 25-10, 25-13, 25-6.
Kylie Fenton still had three kills, three aces and two digs for the Lakers as Maddie Waite got three assists and three digs.
Morgan Richardson set the tone for Westhill by picking up 11 aces. Kate Heinrich added four aces to go with 12 kills as Katie Culligan had seven kills and Tori Militi produced 17 digs and Hannah Schmitz had 26 assists.
Cazenovia lost again on Thursday, falling to Marcellus 25-15, 25-17, 25-15, the Mustangs led by Bronte Stahl’s nine kills and 12 digs and Jenna Mattison’s 22 assists.
Even with a five-set defeat to Tully on March 25, the Chittenango girls volleyball team remained confident that it could quickly regain its winning form.
And the Bears did so in last Monday’s match against Faith Heritage, taking just three sets to put away the Saints 25-12, 25-16, 25-18.
Camryn Kackison gained 13 assists to go with her four kills. Lily Callahan had 10 assists and led Chittenango with five kills as she, along with Olivia Fawcett and Rachel Gilbert, had three aces apiece. In all, 12 different Bears players earned at least one kill by match’s end.
A day later, against Hamilton, Chittenango rolled through the first set 25-12 and, after a close 28-26 loss in the second set, closed out the Emerald Knights 25-13 and 25-15 in the next two sets.
Callahan got 10 aces and 18 assists, with Kackison adding 14 assists, three kills and four digs. Mary Tassone gained 10 kills and six digs, with Gilbert adding five aces. Fawcett had four blocks as she and Jackie Korosex both earned four kills.
At 6-3 going into the week, the Chittneango boys volleyball team took a setback against Jamesville-DeWitt, falling in four sets to the Red Rams.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Bears pulled out a close second set 26-24 and nearly got in front in the match, only to have J-D take the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-21.
Aiden Adams had 18 digs and Nate Dziedzic got 16 digs to go with five kills. Evan Edwards added 12 digs as Will Bailey put up nine kills and 11 digs and Jake Simmons notched seven kills along with 18 assists.
