ONONDAGA COUNTY –
At 2-3 on the season going into March, the Westhill girls basketball team was quite glad to get 0-7 Christian Brothers Academy last Tuesday night and, led by Catherine Dadey, rose to the .500 mark by beating the Brothers 58-45.
During a steady first half, the Warriors built a 31-18 advantage, and withstood all of CBA’s late rallies by having Dadey work her total to 26 points, nearly half of which came from four 3-pointers.
Jada Doss and Tess Roesch each helped out, earning 11 points apiece, while Kaylin Battista gained eight points. The Brothers got 13 points from Amelia Bonacci and 10 points apiece from Gabby Nichols and Sidney Vaughn.
Then it was the Warriors against Skaneateles Thursday and pulled it out 47-42, something that look to be close when Westhill bolted to a 16-4 first-quarter edge.
The Lakers clawed back to within three, 22-19, by halftime, and stayed within range the rest of the night as Maddy Ramsgard picked up 15 points and Kate Aberi had 12 points to pace Skaneateles.
To hang on, the Warriors needed Dadey to put up 20 points with enough help from Roesch, earning nine points, and Kate Heinrich, who had seven points.
Before this, Skaneateles took a 54-39 defeat to Syracuse Academy of Science last Tuesday , a game where Tatumn Pas’cal had 12 points, helped by Maddy Ramsgard’s eight points and Kate Aberi’s six points.
Westhill closed out its week Saturday with a 56-44 victory over Onondaga on Saturday, led by Roesch, who poured in 15 points as Janiah Robinson converted 10 points. Heinrich had nine points as Doss and Kaylin Battista finished with eight points apiece.
By contrast, Skaneateles earned a 50-42 victory over Moravia that same Saturday, using a 16-2 second-quarter surge to take command as Pas’cal and Ramsgard both gained 12 points, with Aberi adding nine points and Faith Wagner eight points.
Late in the week, Solvay took a 3-2 record into its game against 3-5 Jordan-Elbridge and, with a stirring late comeback, pulled out a 40-39 victory over the Eagles.
An early Bearcats lead disappeared when J-E outscored them 16-2 in the second quarter. Trailing 24-15 at the break, Solvay made up most of that deficit in the third quarter.
Then, in the final period, Ryleigh Bidwell and Myah Platler helped the Bearcats complete the rally, combining for nine of the team’s 11 points as it inched in front.
All told, Bidwell had 11 points to go with 15 rebounds and four steals, while Platler had 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Mag Kemp helped out with nine points and seven rebounds.
On the Eagles’ side, Kyler Langhorn earned 11 points and Gabby Smart had 10 points. Abbie Ahern, Ava Hildebrant and Julie Smith got six points apiece.
Earlier in the week, Solvay fell 52-27 to undefeated Mexico last Tuesday night, though Kemp had nine points and 14 rebounds as Platler had eight points and 11 rebounds.
But the Bearcats handled Fabius-Pompey 40-17 on Wednesday night, with Kemp amassing 20 rebounds to go with her 12 points as Platler had six points and seven rebounds. Natalie Orr also had six points.
Prior to facing Solvay, J-E could not slow down Weedsport, who moved to 9-0 on the season last Tuesday by beating the Eagles 59-31.
Held without a field goal in the first quarter, J-E eventually had Hildebrant and Smith each produce nine points. Suzie Nemec (13 points) and Emma Stark (12 point) paced Weedsport.
