ONONDAGA COUNTY –
If nothing else, Saturday’s girls basketball team between Jamesville-DeWitt and Fayetteville-Manlius was supposed to givee two of Central New York’s top seniors – Momo LaClair and Lexie Roe – a chance to challenge each other.
But that game got postponed, as was the Red Rams’ Monday trip to Cortland, the season for area girls basketball affected once more by pandemic protocols.
Before all this, F-M took a 59-33 defeat to Nottingham last Tuesday in what appeared, at first, to be a showcase for Roe as she went up against Bulldogs’ Amaya Williams.
Roe, who scored 41 points in an overtime win over West Genesee on Feb. 26, had just 17 points here, and the rest of the Hornets’ roster managed just eight field goals. Williams had 21 points, four assists and four steals, helped by Zyhona Glen, who amassed 15 points and 13 rebounds.
F-M did win 53-26 over Henninger on Thursday night, as all eight players that saw action for the Hornets earned at least one field goal. Roe finished with 22 points as Lilly Coleman and Maeve Schefter got six points apiece and Evie Kawa added five points.
J-D was trying to break out of a two-game skid when it traveled to Baldwinsville last Monday night, but were unable to topple the Bees in a 56-38 defeat.
B’ville’s lone loss had come to Cicero-North Syracuse on Feb. 23, and the Red Rams intended to do the same, keeping things close during a low-scoring first half.
Only trailing 21-18 at the break, J-D got held to seven points in the third quarter, allowing the Bees to get clear.
Momo LaClair had 11 points, with Lily Loewenguth getting seven points and Isabella Sindon earning six points. For B’ville, Sydney Huhtala (14 points), Hannah Mimas (12 points) and Kyrah Wilbur (10 points) all scored in double figures.
