Having a little more depth on hand proved the difference for each of the Baldwinsville cross country teams during last Wednesday’s meet against West Genesee at Camillus Middle School.
Despite a 1-2 finish by the Wildcats in the girls race, the Bees still won 25-31, while in the boys race B’ville had a larger margin, prevailing 22-35.
The boys race was a lot closer on the individual side, with Colin Delaney chased by WG’s Peter McMahon, but able to win in 16 minutes, 59 seconds, two seconds ahead of McMahon’s 17:01.
Solomon Holden-Betts, in 17:48, beat out the Wildcats’ Aiden Walsh (17:53) for third, and then the Bees swept the fifth through seventh spots, with Adam Kozman fifth in 19:18, Owen Weaver sixth in 19:24 and Arthur Bauer seventh in 19:25 to clinch team honors. Max Naples got to 10th place in 20:13.
B’ville had to watch in the girls race as WG’s Lauren Puchta pulled away from the field, winning in 20:58, a full minute ahead of teammate Claire Griffin’s 21:58.
But then the Bees swept the next five spots to take team honors, led by McKenzie Schmidt, who was third in 22:01, three seconds behind Griffin.
Olivia Creelman made her way to fourth place in 22:24, with Margaret Solomon fifth in 22:33. Vivian Holden-Betts was sixth in 22:52 as Sophia Cavallaro clinched the victory, getting seventh place in 23:06. Mary Sabatino (24:26) was 10th.
This Saturday, B’ville concludes the regular season hosting Liverpool at Durgee Junior High School, varsity races starting at 2 p.m.
