To a large degree, the big numbers put up by Hannah Mimas had come to define the season for the Baldwinsville girls soccer team.
Just how much Mimas had done would become evident late last week, when Mimas reached, and then surpassed, the school record for goal-scoring once held by Emma Firenze.
When B’ville kicked off last Saturday against visiting Westhill, Mimas had 76 career tallies, two short of the Firenze mark. By game’s end, Mimas stood alone at the top, having carried the Bees to a 4-0 victory.
It all started in the 25th minute, Mimas converting to put B’ville in front 1-0. Not even five minutes later, a corner kick led to a scramble and Mimas, from the point, put home the record-tying goal.
That wasn’t enough, though, as to make it 3-0 Mimas returned to put in that record-setting 79th goal on a curling shot from the left side. One more goal followed, and B’ville had recovered well from what had taken place the night before.
Given a second chance against two-time defending Section III Class AA champion Fayetteville-Manlius last Friday night, the Bees found itself overwhelmed by the Hornets’ skill and finishing ability in a 5-1 defeat.
They had first met Oct. 12 at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, F-M prevailing 2-0. Since then, the Hornets had taken a pair of losses (to East Syracuse Minoa and Cicero-North Syracuse) plus a draw with Liverpool, signaling vulnerability.
B’ville, sporting its own 7-2 record, did not get rattled when F-M scored early in the rematch, tying it 1-1 in the 11th minute as Mimas converted again, her 17th goal of the season.
But the game got decided when the Hornets countered, twice converting to build a 3-1 advantage before the game was 20 minutes old, and then doubling that margin during the second half.
Combined, Jenna Boutilier and Alexandra Gomez made 11 saves. F-M got two goals apiece from Lauren Clark and Ryan Dauksza, with Chloe Hodge getting the other goal and Morgan Goodman earning two assists.
After beating Westhill, just one more game remains for the Bees, a Tuesday test against C-NS, whom it beat 2-0 when they first played Oct. 15, but had since won five in a row.
