Having handled Auburn in its Oct. 3 opener, the West Genesee girls tennis team now attempted to build a win streak against some of its Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division foes.
The Wildcats would battle past Cicero-North Syracuse 5-2 in last Tuesday’s league opener, with Katie Viau and Angelina Llanos not dropping a game in their singles matches as Angelina Allen topped Karly Williams 6-4, 6-2.
Three of the four doubles matches went to three sets, including Isabella Allen and Isabelle Wells rallying past Jenna Mills and Lauren Misco 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 as Alyssa Congel and Margaret Mello won 6-2, 6-2 over Autumn Brown and Cambrie Hibbard.
Elianna Cui and Kayla Latone dropped a third-set tie-breaker in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 defeat to Eve Campitello and Brooke Ten Brink, with Sarah Bacon and Annalyse Kittell falling to Abigail Bustin and Megan Johnston 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
But when WG took its turn against powerhouse Fayetteville-Manlius last Friday afternoon, the Wildcats were, again, subdued by the Hornets, this time by a 6-1 margin.
Other than Viau and Llanos sweeping Samhitha Adavikolanu and Angela Iskander 6-2, 6-2, F-M claimed every set, the closest of them involving Latone and Wells, who lost 6-1, 6-4 to Alexix Ahn and Emma Zogg.
A day later, facing Baldwinsville, WG would nearly upend the Bees, only to take a 4-3 defeat. Viau beat Brooke Tutor 6-3, 6-4 in singles, with Congel-Mello and Latone-Wells both prevailing in doubles, but Llanos lost a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 battle to B’ville’s Paige Tromblee.
Also maintaining its perfect mark at the expense of a local rival, Marcellus got the best of Westhill last Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs prevailing 7-0.
Danielle Copp, in singles, topped Sophia Dimovski 6-0, 6-1 as Kathleen DeMarle took out Katie Hagrman 6-2, 6-1 and, in a single set, Colleen Marsh edged Mia Doss 8-6.
Casey Conklin and Sophia Shaw led in doubles, getting a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Bridget Thornton and Sophie Langdon as Bella Clarke and Maddie Vetsch handled Delaney Carroll and Jillian Eckert 6-2, 6-3.
Two other single-set matches took place, Sophia Powless and Sarah Louer beating Megan Dwyer and Hannah Johnston 8-2 as Angela Coleman and Sophie Switzer won 8-5 over Paige Agostini and Isabel Dickinson-Cominolli.
Marcellus went from there to handling Homer by that same 7-0 margin on Thursday, again in single-set matches that went to eight games.
DeMarle beat Emma Effinger 8-1 and Copp blanked Eila Spanbauer 8-0. In doubles, the teams of Conklin-Shaw, Vetsch-Clarke, Powless-Louer and Coleman-Spitzer all prevailed, Powless and Lauer having the closest match but beating Sienna Haskins and Charlotte Wallis 8-4.
Jordan-Elbridge tried to rebound from its Oct. 3 defeat to Marcellus in last Tuesday’s match against Phoenix – and did so, handling the Firebirds 5-1.
In single-set matches to 10 games, the Eagles’ Gabrielle Skotinski held off Mia Graham 10-8, while Lizzie Conrad won1 0-5 over Hailey Fredericks.
Between them, J-E’s doubles teams of Lexi Delfavero-Ireland Hill, Laura Alcock-Hannah Osborn and Ella Dwyer-Madelynn Maldonado dropped just seven games in their trio of victories.
Then J-E faced Westhill on Saturday and the Warriors prevailed 6-1, taking all four doubles matches, the closest of them a 6-2, 7-5 win by Agostini and Dickinson-Cominili over Laney Green and Jillian Ferris.
Up in singles, the Eagles got on the board when Maldonado handled Doss 6-3, 6-2, but Hagrman and Dimkovski earned the other points for Westhill.
