A championship season for the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team concluded with one of its top athletes taking part in last weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet.
Slater DeLeon traveled to Staten Island’s Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex to run in the 300-meter dash and also take part in the long jump.
Having gone 36.80 seconds in the 300 this season, DeLeon took it much faster here, his time of 36.47 seconds breaking the school record of 36.53.
It took a time of 35.36 seconds to reach the finals, where Tahje Flemmings, from Benjamin Banneker High School, and Hempstead’s Cavel Campbell finished in a dead heat for the state title, each going 34.54 seconds.
In the long jump, DeLeon looked to improve upon a top attempt of 21 feet 1 inch, but could only go 19’11” on his best jump, with other jumps of 19’7 3/4” and 18’11 1/2”.
The state title went to Freeport’s Christian Quinn, whose top attempt of 22’11” on his first jump was 2 ½ inches ahead of the 22’8 1/2” from Brockport’s Rodrick Cox-Cooper.
