Having won against all kinds of competition throughout this winter, it only made sense for the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team to win once more – and bring home the Section III Class B-2 championship.
The Lakers earned 155 points, more than double the total of second-place Clinton (74 points), and dominating an 11-team field during Saturday’s sectional meet at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
Cazenovia went 1-2 in the 55-meter dash, Joe Spires prevailing in 6.74 seconds and Slater DeLeon second in 6.83 seconds. The 300-meter dash reversed those results, DeLeon, in 36.80 seconds, holding off Spires (36.93) for the top spot.
DeLeon also won the long jump, going 21 feet 1 inch as Dylan Anderson (18’10 1/2″) was fourth, while Spires paired with Charles Kubiniec, Connor Wilson and Andrew Lee to run the 4×200 relay in 1:39.46, beating out second-place Marcellus, who posted 1:40.79.
Dalton Sevier topped 6’3″ and easily prevailed in the high jump, with Anderson third at 5’6″, Wilson fourth at 5’4″ and Dylan Albicker sixth. In the 600-meter run, Andrew Kent beat the field in 1:27.05, a full second ahead of Jordan-Elbridge’s Kenny Williams (1:28.05).
Gordan Wester added another Lakers title in the shot put, heaving it 38’7 1/4″, one inch ahead of the 38’6 1/4″ from Skaneateles’ Ben Euto. Then, in the weight throw, Wester got second place with 42’8 1/2″ behind Onondaga’s Sean Dwyer (45’8 1/2″).
Jared Smith made it to second place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:49.44 as Cassidy Gilmore was fifth in 2:58.02 and Hunter McCullough was seventh. In the 1,600-meter run, Smith again finished second, in 4:52.47 behind Skaneateles’ Matt Persampieri (4:48.34).
Connor Wilson took second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.56 seconds, with Jason Olkowski (8.74) sixth. Cormac Race, Dylan Albicker, Alex Lansing and Dan Millson were third in the 4×400 relay in 3:53.94 as Smith, Kent, Gilmore and Mike Senehi were third in the 4×800 relay in 9:16.15.
Eric Groff was sixth in the 3,200-meter run in 11:02.46, while Anderson took seventh and Albicker eighth place in the triple jump.
Meanwhile, in the Class B-1 sectional meet, Chittenango finished seventh in the boys meet with 26 points, while the girls Bears finished 10th with 15 points.
Kenny Matthews, Parker Tedford, Warren Tedford and Tristam LaFountaine were second in the 4×400 in 3:43.06, just behind Homer’s 3:42.08 as that same quartet was second (1:40.17) to Institute of Technology Central (1:38.57) in the 4×200. Tedford also took fourth place in the 300 in 39.22 seconds.

Chittenango’s girls had Lauren Suppe take third place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:18.10, while Kiara Waite got fifth place in the 600 in 1:49.34. Suppe, Waite, McKayla Capeling and Piper Beckwith were third in the 4×800 in 10:43.25, the Bears also sixth (2:05.45) in the 4×200 as Tamia Williams, Jordan Wagner, Jordan Horzempa and Brooke Price took part.
