With an emphatic and comprehensive performance, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls indoor track and field team rolled to victory in Thursday night’s Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division championships at SRC Arena.
All told, the Hornets earned 161 points, well clear of the battle for second between Cicero-North Syracuse (102) and Liverpool (101), while the F-M boys had a solid showing, too, earning 92 points for third place, not far from C-NS’s winning total of 110 points.
Running together at 3,000 meters, Claire Walters, in 10:17.12, beat out Grace Kaercher (10:17.31) for the top spot as Walters also took the 1,500-meter run in 4:38.15, with Hannah Kaercher third in 4:48.36.
Phoebe White, in 1:39.35, was a close second to C-NS’s Kate Putman (1:39.09) at 600 meters, with Grace Kaercher fourth in 1:43.46 before she helped Walters, Hannah Kaercher and Maddy Duggleby go 9:40.67 to win the 4×800 relay.
White paired with Samantha Pynn, Arianna Caron and Julia Egnaczyk to win the 4×400 relay in 4:07.71, more than eight seconds ahead of the field, and to complete the relay sweep White, Pynn, Fiona Mejico and Maya McKenzie claimed the 4×200 in 1:48.15 to Baldiwnsville’s 1:49.64.
Isabel Zuber chimed in when she earned a first-place long jump of 16 feet 11 3/4 inches as Elina Cabrera (14’8 3/4″) was fifth. In the triple jump, Zuber’s 36-foot attempt beat C-NS’s Sierra Davis (35’6″) by half a foot.
Harper Stoppacher, clearing 5’2″, won the high jump, with Katie Berge’ sixth topping 4’6″, while in the pole vault Wren Usiatynski was the only competitor to clear 9 feet, no one else doing better than 7’6″.
Natalee Barber got second place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.25 seconds, with Hannah Kaczorowski eighth. Duggleby was second in the 1,000-meter run in 3:07.79 and Debbie Lucchetti (3:13.03) was fourth.
Mejico was second in the 300-meter dash in 43.74 seconds to B’ville’s Karen Ekure (43.51) as Elrose Hanlon was seventh in the 55-meter dash. Bella Petrie was third (26’4 3/4″) and Tochi Ezidiegwu fourth (25’11 1/4″) in the shot put.
On the boys side, F-M’s Peyton Geehrer rolled to victory in the 3,200-meter run in 9:21.63 as Sam Otis was second in 9:26.55. Geoff Howles beat the field in the 1,600-meter run in 4:28.16, more than eight seconds ahead of B’ville’s Jack Michaels (4:36.35).
Also, in the 4×400, the Hornets had Ian Brown, Owen Snyder, Ben Hutz and Corey Gallagher prevail in 3:39.17 to the 3:40.74 from second-place B’ville, with Hutz, Gallagher, Brown and Snyder also winning the 4×200 in 1:37.23 to the Bees’ 1:37.44.
Dan Sokolovic won the shot put with a toss of 44’6 1/2″ as he also was second (51’4 3/4″) to Liverpool’s Jaylen Graham (52’11 1/2″) in the weight throw. Gallagher took second (38.04 seconds) to C-NS’s Sam Nessel (37.85) in the 300, with Geehrer, Otis, Howles and Jack Altimonda second in the 4×800 in 8:34.04.
Hutz, in 1:31.68, beat out Altimonda (1:32.06) for fourth place in the 600. Trevor Krukin was fifth in the 1,000 in 2:49.56 as Mark Hanlon (2:50.68) was seventh. Owen Snyder got fifth place in the 55 hurdles in 8.97 seconds.
One night earlier, Christian Brothers Academy had a modest showing in the Onondaga High School League Division I championships, only scoring 14 points on the girls side and 12 points on the boys side.
Most of the CBA girls’ total came from Isabella Cannizzo finishing second in the 3,000 in 11:25.55 to go with a third in the 4×400 (4:41.67).
Six of the boys points were earned by Cooper Groat getting second place in the 3,200 in 10:53.46, with the other six from Michael McMahon’s third-place time of 4:48.36 in the 1,600.
