Things continued to roll along for the Chittenango girls volleyball team as it stayed undefeated in its 2020 portion of the schedule and prepared for Tuesday’s showdown against Cortland, the only team to beat them this winter.
Competing against last Wednesday night, the Bears improved to 13-1 by dominating the Blue Devils 25-12 and 25-13 in the first two sets and taking the third set 25-20 for the sweep.
Carolyn Myka earned 12 assists and four aces, her passes often going to Sarah Martin, who had eight kills. Chelsea Lamphere got five kills and four aces as Jada Masiclat had four kills and three aces.
A day later, hosting Port Byron, the Bears were pushed in the first set, but escaped it 25-23, then won the second set 25-20 and finished off the Panthers 25-15 in the third.
Martin put away 13 kills, adding seven digs and three aces. Masiclat earned eight kills and six digs, with Lamphere getting seven kills and two blocks.
Aside from her 17 assists, Bayla Cutrie managed five kills and five digs as Myka had 15 assists and 13 digs. Savannah Penoyer produced 13 digs. Julianne Kent had five digs.
Chittenango’s boys volleyball team was 2-2 going into last Tuesday’s match against 5-0 Oneida, and was close in every single set against the Indians, though it lost 25-23, 25-22, 26-24.
Austin Strickler put away 16 kills for the Bears as Alex Reymond had nine kills and Seth Kimball seven kills to go with his team-best 26 digs.
On the back line, Brandon Turner had 16 assists, seven digs and five kills, with Tom McIntosh getting 11 assists, plus 10 digs. Caleb Barnard had 18 digs. Oneida got 13 kills from Zander Farr, 18 assists from Ethan Scanlon and 15 assists from Tesfaye Hatch.
Competing on Friday against Canastota, Chittenango moved back to the .500 mark (3-3) by putting together a 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 win over the Raiders.
Turner finished with 13 assists, nine digs and five kills. Strickler notched 11 kills, helped on the front line by Kimball and Ed Heller (four kills apiece) as Kimball got eight digs, a total Barnard matched, Mike Pascual adding six digs.
In bowling, Chittenango took on Christian Brothers Academy last Tuesday and, in the girls match, picked off a couple of points from the OHSL leaders, though the Bears lost 5-2 at Strike-N-Spare Lanes.
Abbie Austin led with a 445 series, just ahead of Keelin Davie’s 436 set. Sarah Vigliotti had a 431 series and Brooke DiFlorio a 402 set as Eliana Occhino (524 series), Rachel Farella (505 series) and Cadence Malicek (502 series) paced CBA.
The boys match between Chittenango and CBA featured a 423 series from Angelo Falcon to lead the Bears as Tanner King had a 406 series and Devon Hardy a 400 series.
Chitttenango’s girls then won 7-0 over Bishop Grimes on Wednesday as Vigliotti remained consistent with a 426 series and Austin, with a 165 game and 412 series, was close behind.
These same two teams met again Thursday and again the Bears won 7-0, with DiFlorio shooting games of 176 and 172 in her 498 series and Austin contributing a 408 series.
