Except for that December defeat to Cortland, the Chittenango girls volleyball team has maintained its championship form of the last few years.
Again, the Bears prevailed in last Tuesday’s match against Christian Brothers Academy, where it survived a tough first set 25-23 and won the second set 25-16.
The Brothers extended the match by taking the third set 25-20, but Chittenango dominated the fourth set 25-12 to close out the match, Carolyn Myka finishing with 25 assists and six digs.
Sarah Martin, with nine kills and 13 digs, led a well-balanced front line as Bayla Cutrie had eight kills, plus 16 digs and nine assists.
Savannah Penoyer and Jada Masiclat each finished with eight kills, Penoyer getting 18 digs and Masiclat finishing with 13 digs. Chelsea Lamphere had six kills and Julianne Kent added six digs.
A rematch with CBA took place 48 hours later as Chittenango rolled through a 25-9 opening set and then won each of the next two sets by 25-23 margins to this time sweep the Brothers.
With nine kills and 15 digs, Martin paced the Bears as Penoyer added six kills and Lamphere had three aces. Myka produced 14 assists and Callahan helped out with five assists.
Chittenango also defeated Weedsport 25-10, 25-18, 25-14, with Martin serving up nine aces, also getting five kills and five digs as Myka earned five assists and Lamphere had five aces.
Moving to boys volleyball, Chittenango ran up against undefeated Vernon-Verona-Sherrill last Tuesday night, unable to keep up in a 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 loss to the Red Devils.
Austin Strickler still had 12 kills, three blocks and four digs for the Bears as Alek Reymond had six kills and five digs. Seth Kimball had 12 digs, three kills and three blocks, while Tom McIntosh earned 12 assists and Brandon Turner had nine assists.
For VVS, Colten Terrier earned 23 assists and 10 digs, feeding it to a well-balanced front line where Evan Kirkpatrick and Cole Winn each had 12 kills and Gavin Miller got 11 kills.
Moving on to Thursday’s match against Westmoreland, the Bears got the best of the Bulldogs, improving to 2-2 as it earned a 25-15, 25-13, 25-21 sweep.
Turner shared back-line duties with Abraham Alpuerto, each of them getting 13 assists as Turner also picked up a team-best nine kills.
Caleb Barnard added nine digs, with Kimball and Josh Mattia each earning eight digs. Reymond had seven kills, while Mikel Pascual got five kills. William Bailey and Edward Heller joined Strickler, the trio getting four kills apiece.
In bowling, Chittenango competed last Friday against Weedsport and swept that match at Strike-N-Spare Lanes.
During the boys Bears’ 7-0 sweep of the Warriors, Anthony Roberts finished with a 179 on his way to a 500 series. Angelo Falcone started with a 192 in his 480 series as Jacob Podunajec added a 446 set.
On the girls side, Chittenango also a swept Weedsport 7-0, led by Caitlyn Spaulding, who had a 456 series with games of 164 and 170. Keelin Davie opened with a 181 game in her 421 series as Mikayla Joncas added a 375 set.
Before this, Chittenango faced Homer last Tuesday afternoon, with the girls Bears picking up some points against the Trojans, but still taking a 5-2 defeat.
