In their own ways, wrestling teams from Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA and East Syracuse Minoa maintained their strong starts in last Wednesday’s meets.
The Rams were dominant against Oswego, hammering the Buccaneers 77-3, while the Spartans had little trouble handlnig Syracuse
J-D/CBA was coming off a 4-1 mark at its own Red Ram Duals on Dec. 7 which had included a head-to-head win over ESM, and kept that up against Oswego, dropping just one bout when Anysa Goeman, at 138 pounds, fell 12-10 to the Bucs’ Jacob Vickery.
Right after Sam Washington (145 pounds) edged Ben Spedding 5-4 in overtime, pins were earned in order by Shoh Alibekov (152 pounds), Alikhn Abdullayev (160 pounds), Enver Bulatov (170 pounds) and Tyriq Block (182 pounds), with Bulatov’s 50-second fall over Owen Warner the quickest.
Five more mat wins followed, including pins by Nikoli Sims (285 pounds) and Nate Finn (106 pounds) before Jackson Thomas (113 pounds) pinned Michael Harris in 31 seconds and William BeSeth (120 pounds) finished off Lucas Maniccia in just 36 seconds.
ESM moved to 4-0 on the season by handling Syracuse 63-21. Four Spartans – Aslan Abdullah, Ali Abdullah, Andrew Crone and Conor Todd – picked up pins.
Then the Spartans went to Saturday’s Brett Dixon Memorial Duals at Central Square, where it defeated Jordan-Elbridge 51-30, but lost 58-27 to the hosts from Central Square and 63-24 to the eventual champions from Liverpool.
Todd won all three of his bouts in those contests, with Aslan and Ali Abdullah both prevailing twice. Alex Leo also won twice, with his lone defeat a 4-2 decision against Liverpool’s Jeremiah Paulson.
Fayetteville-Manlius had its SCAC Metro division opener with Liverpool, set for last Wednesday night, postponed, but would go Saturday to the Phoenix Round Robin, where it finished 14th in a 17-team field.
Leading the Hornets, Sawyer Dereszynski, at 170, shut out Phoenix’s Ayden Slack 7-0 to reach the finals, where Grand Island’s Adam Daghestani pinned him in the second period.
Alex Dauksza salvaged fifth place at 160 with an 11-6 decision over South Jefferson-Sandy Creek’s Nick Luciani, with Luke Richter taking sixth place at 152 pounds.
J-D/CBA goes through its own tournament at the end of this week, the Rams at Indian River for the North Country Invitational after ESM meets Central Square on Wednesday.
