For most of this decade, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team has held dominion over many of its Onondaga High School League foes.
One of them was Homer, whom the Lakers had beaten every season since 2011 – at least until Monday’s match, where the Trojans would handle Cazenovia in three sets.
Both teams had appeared Sept. 28 in the Baldwinsville Fall Swing Tournament and, after group play, went to the Bronze Division, where Cazenovia fell to reigning state Class B champion Westhill in the quarterfinals and Homer reached the semifinals before getting stopped by Jamesville-DeWitt.
Having seen each other at B’ville, the Trojans gained confidence and, going head-to-head against the Lakers, took command after claiming a close-fought opening set 26-24.
Homer won the next two sets by margins of 25-11 and 25-9 as Delaney Hartnett led the Trojans with 22 assists and 11 digs. Kaia Hubbard put up 10 kills and Allyson Natale added 11 kills. Izzi Wallace finished with 18 digs as Celine Beaudry earned six kills, joining Natale as they each finished with nine digs.
On the Lakers’ side, Josie Avery managed eight assists, with Maddie Waite getting three kills. Defensively, Waite produced 20 digs as Kylie Fenton got 19 digs and Natalie Tresco added six digs.
Just 24 hours later, Cazenovia looked to rebound against Jordan-Elbridge, and it did so by dominating the first set 25-11, taking the second set 25-17 and holding off the Eagles 25-22 in the third to complete the sweep.
Fenton earned five of the Lakers’ 15 aces as she and Julia Bauder both got six kills. Waite added three aces and five digs as Hauser, Clements and Quinlan Emhoff had four kills apiece. Avery fed all of them, earning 25 assists as Maren Smith contributed three kills.
Now the Lakers (7-2) would get some rest before returning to action next Monday at LaFayette, starting a stretch of three matches in four nights that also includes a Tuesday visit from Skaneateles and an Oct. 10 trip to Hannibal.
