Girls tennis teams from Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy both remained atop their respective leagues with critical league victories.
Amid its busiest stretch of the regular season, J-D faced a key test last Wednesday when it faced Auburn, and the Red Rams’ strength in singles, plus enough contributions in doubles, turned back the Maroons 4-3.
Tara Pollock, in first singles, topped Makayla Huntley 6-2, 6-0, with Mona Farah routing Rosalia Bartolotta 6-0, 6-1 as Inika Gajra earned a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Erin Calkins.
Auburn countered by winning three doubles matches in straight sets, but Riya Sharma and Lana Wisniewski secured J-D’s clinching point as they defeated Claire Diffin and Alexandra Vitale 7-5, 6-1.
Before this, J-D handled Fulton 7-0. Farah, Gajra and Sharma each won singles matches in straight sets, and just seven games were dropped in the four doubles matches.
A point was dropped against Cortland a day later, but J-D still prevailed 6-1, with Reid, one game from defeat, rallying to edge Emma Hutchings 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 as every other point was earned in straight sets.
By that same 6-1 margin, J-D handled Oswego on Thursday in its fourth match in as many days. Cline’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 defeat to the Buccaneers’ Sonja Anderson was made up by singles wins from Gajra and Reid as the doubles matches were swept.
As for CBA, it was undefeated going into last Thursday’s match against Cazenovia, where it turned back the Lakers’ challenge and prevailed by a 6-1 margin.
In first singles, Julia DelPino beat Nova Berger 6-1, 6-2, while Maddie Tallman handled Baylee Pierce 6-2, 6-3. The only point was dropped when Lily Geneocco lost to Julia Knutsen 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Gieselle Vlassis and Grace DelPino paired up in doubles and claimed a 6-3, 6-4 clash over Alex Galle and N ina Royer. Grace Catalano and Aubrey Mills blanked Clare Douglas and Emma Schwartz 6-0, 6-0.
Annie Kilmartin and Isabella Mead worked their way to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Regan Dauenhauer and Mae Sayre, with Sophie Schultz and Schutie Zirath beating Katie Pavelchak and Emma Thornton by those same scores.
CBA had also surrendered a point in last Tuesday’s match with Phoenix, but still won 6-1 as it lost just six games in eight sets of doubles, while Vlassis and Julia DelPino rolled to singles points.
Bishop Grimes gained doubles points from Homer last Monday in a 5-2 defeat. Olivia Coppola and Maggie Eallonardo topped Madelyn Cotterill and Charlotte Wallis 6-4, 7-6, while Sarah Falgiatano and Sofia Ziankoski beat Alina Heyer and Allison Thompson 6-3, 6-4.
Grimes then lost to Cazenovia by that same 5-2 margin on Wednesday, with Katie Knittel prevailing in singles 6-1, 6-1 over Clare Douglas as Michela Marturano won 7-5, 6-3 over Baylee Pierce.
To wrap up its week, Grimes fell 7-0 to Skaneateles on Friday afternoon. Two of the singles matches went to three sets, Knittel falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to Kenna Ellis as Falgiatano had a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 defeat to Lily Miller.
