Already off to a 2-0 start, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team welcomed Christian Brothers Academy to the Cazenovia College pool for Wednesday night’s marquee meet.
Despite plenty of individual standout performances by the Brothers, it was the Hornets again unleashing its deep roster late in the meet and doing enough to earn a 94-90 victory.
CBA led through the first half of the event, starting with the 200-yard medley relay, where Kaitlyn Bushnell, Darien Tompkins, Lauren Kelly and Ally Howard roared to a time of one minute, 52.90 seconds, well clear of F-M’s 2:01.85.
The Brothers would win each of the first six events and led 48-44. Kelly went 2:16.02 to claim the 200 individual medley, while Bushnell, in 25.64 seconds, edged the Hornets’ Morgan Kingsley (25.67) in the 50 freestyle and Tompkins held off the Hornets’ Emma Luttrell, 59.84 seconds to 1:00.67, in the 100 butterfly.
Kayla Newman broke two minutes in the 200 freestyle, winning in 1:59.85 to the 2:02.74 from F-M’s Hannah Kellogg. Also, in diving, Sophie Menar got 204.85 points, with the Hornets’ Alessandra Manicone (196.60) a close second.
F-M had enough second and third-place finishes to keep pace, caught up when Kellogg won the 100 freestyle in 55.32 seconds to Bushnell’s 57.63, and then took the lead for good in the 500 freestyle.
Newman won that race in a season-best 5:17.49, but Luttrell was second in 5:32.55, with Lindsay Mathews third and Grace Reyna, all good for 11 crucial points.
Then, in the 200 freestyle relay, Luttrell, Kellogg, Kingsley and Georgia Langan went 1:43.62 to CBA’s 1:47.83, and F-M went on to get clinching points by having Addie Antshel finish second in the 100 backstroke (1:06.37) before Kingsley and Katie Ottaviano got second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke.
CBA won all of those late events, Tompkins swimming the 100 backstroke in 1:03.56 and Kelly going 1:06.99 in the 100 breaststroke. In the closing 400 freestyle relay, Kelly, Tompkins, Newman and Sophia Silver won in 3:44.79, just ahead of the 3:46.13 from the Hornets’ quartet of Kellogg, Kingsley, Luttrell and Mathews.
Before all this, Jamesville-DeWitt opened its girls swim season Sept. 6 against Syracuse City at Nottingham High School, the Red Rams working its way to an 89-75 victory.
Sofia Bebla led J-D with a pair of individual titles, going 2:31.41 in the 200 before a victory in the 500 freestyle in 6:15.76. Amelia Hesler swam the 100 freestyle in 55.06 seconds and helped Claire Huyck, Marianna Lorenzo and Lucy Falso go 2:01.14 in the 200 medley relay.
Emily Ninestein, in 1:05.88, edged Gwen Lisetr (1:06.76) in the 100 butterfly, with Kathryn Donaghue taking the 200 freestyle in 2:19.67 as Hadwynne Gross was second in 2:25.53.
Abby McGuire earned 192.25 points in diving to beat out teammate Grace Evans (172.30). Lister swam the 100 backstroke in 1:07.35 to beat out Huyck’s 1:09.12 as Lucy Heflin went 1:19.81 in the 100 breaststroke.
A meet between J-D and CBA set for last Thursday got pushed back to Sept. 24, after the Red Rams have its own battle with F-M on Thursday, two days following a meet with Mexico.
