The constant rain outside forced the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team to head indoors in order to complete some of its SCAC Metro division matches.
But when it returned outdoors last Wednesday, the Hornets suffered a rare defeat, unable to close out West Genesee as it lost a 4-3 decision to the Wildcats.
Cameron Lukasik won in singles, handling Ty Lisi 6-4, 6-3, but WG earned the other singles points when James Plunkett defeated David Fernando 7-6, 6-0 and Matt Mannara topping Davin Woolridge 6-1, 6-1.
When Dan Good and Ben Paoli paired up in doubles to for their own 6-1, 6-1 win over Evan Bybee and Derek Hodge, WG was one point away. F-M countered with Rohan Dhawan and Riley Ma handling Stefan Atanasov and Noah Ruston 6-0, 6-0 as Jaden Duggal and Charlie Loh worked past David Puma and Michael White 7-5, 6-4.
Then Ben Farber-McEntee and Andy Sun won the first set 6-2 over Ryan Joyce and Max Mekker, but saw the Wildcats pair win the next two sets by those same 6-2 margins for the clinching point.
Before this, F-M surrendered its first point of the season last Monday against Cicero-North Syracuse on the way to beating the Northstars 6-1.
That came in doubles, where the Northstars’ Ethan Dupell and William Janusz were down a set and in a second-set tie-breaker, but came back to pull out a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Loh and Joshua So.
But F-M still had a singles sweep, initiated when Fernando beat James Corl 6-3, 6-1, just as Max Farber-McEntee beat Ryan Hill 6-1, 6-1 and Lukasik endured a tough first set, but went on to beat Wyatt Dupell 6-4, 6-0.
There were a pair of 6-0, 6-0 shutouts in doubles, Dhawan and Ma doing so against Jonathan Corl and Brandon Millias as Duggal and Woolridge did the same to Josh Matyasik and Holden Sarosy. Sun and Ben Farber-McEntee beat Ryan Gallagher and Edwin Hirsh 6-3, 6-1.
After the defeat to West Genesee, F-M did win a 7-0 rematch with C-NS, highlighted by Fernando’s tough 7-5, 6-4 singles win over Hirsh as Woolridge and Lukasik also won in two sets. The closest doubles match had Sun and Ben Farber-McEntee prevailing 6-3, 6-2 over Josh Matyasik and Holden Sarosy.
A big OHSL Liberty division showdown pitted Christian Brothers Academy against Westhill, with single-set matches to 10 games all claimed in singles by the Brothers as it edged the Warriors 3-2.
Ben Vlassis blanked Jackson Bradley 10-0, just as Dean Vlassis won, 10-1, over Mike Ferrara. Having lost both doubles matches, CBA needed Shivam Nanavati to prevail – and he did, topping Ryan Rolince 10-5.
Jamesville-DeWitt beat Central Square 5-2 last Wednesday, mostly by dominating singles as Peter Hatton got it going with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of the Redhawks’ Lukas Capstraw.
Mark Bratslavsky handled Austin Grosso 6-1, 6-0, with William Guisbond beating Michael Haywood 6-3, 6-0. In doubles, Essex Glowaki and Dhruv Nanavati beat Logan Foster and Ethan Westfall 6-1, 6-0 as Mike Bratslavsky and Aniket Maini handled Kevin Kershner and Jared Smith 6-2, 6-1.
As a follow-up, J-D shut out Auburn 7-0 on Thursday, with Hatton, Aiden Usher and Mike Bratslavsky dropping just three games in six sets of singles play. The doubles matches were lopsided, too, except for Ben Oppedisano and Simon Zhou needing three sets to get past Kevin and Ryan Stechuchak 6-3, 6-7, 10-5.
Bishop Grimes lost, 3-2, to LaFayette last Wednesday, even though it got points from Jeff Wang in singles as he beat Kaleigh Danaher 6-1, 7-5, just as Andrew Coleman and Sean Moran topped Leanna Crouse and Adam McIntyre 6-3, 6-4.
