Into mid-May, the weather continued to affect baseball schedules, with most area high school games postponed last Monday and Tuesday as they waited for it to clear up.
And by the time Cazenovia and Chittenango met up for a second time this season on Saturday, both sides were in the midst of trying to fill out their remaining schedules.
Just like their first meeting May 4 that ended 9-8 in Chittenango’s favor, the Bears prevailed over the Lakers, only this time it was a one-sided affair as Chittenango prevailed 11-1 in five innings.
A four-run third inning and seven-run fifth inning allowed the Bears to end it under the mercy rule, with Cazenovia’s lone run coming in the top of the fourth as Jack Byrnes drove home Dylan Anderson.
Chittenango pitcher Maddox Garvey only allowed three hits in four innings. Aiden Cavotta singled, doubled and drove in three runs, Garvey adding two hits as he joined Devon Spaulding, Ronnie Ince, Tom McIntosh, Carlos Torres, Sean Rooney and Bryce Bishop driving home single runs.
Rain had stopped last Wednesday when Cazenovia had to face state Class A no. 7-ranked Christian Brothers Academy and took a 13-5 defeat to the Brothers.
The Lakers actually a 1-0 lead in the first inning and were tied 4-4 in the third. Anderson, Dylan McCrink and Dominic Paglia got credit for RBIs, Anderson and Aeden Berson each earning two hits.
But CBA went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third and, with the game still in doubt, got away with six runs in the sixth inning.
McCrink, Anderson, Berson and Patrick Linck each saw pitching stints, none longer than two innings. Kent Wilson and Tommy Marzullo led the Brothers with three RBIs apiece.
A day later, Chittenango lost, 2-1, to Jordan-Elbridge, who used a run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie.
The Bears had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Spaulding doubled and scored, but the Eagles tied it an inning later and then got that go-ahead tally as RBIs went to Carson Ashby and Sean Dristle.
