Until they were able to go outdoors again, area high school boys tennis teams had to wait out lots of early-week rains before getting to their last matches of the regular season.
One exception was Cicero-North Syracuse going indoors to challenge powerful Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday, and the Northstars were the first team this spring to earn a point against the Hornets.
It came in doubles, where the Northstars’ Ethan Dupell and William Janusz were down a set and in a second-set tie-breaker, but came back to pull out a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Charlie Loh and Joshua So.
C-NS still lost, 6-1, to F-M as, in singles, James Corl took a 6-3, 6-1 loss to David Fernando, with Ryan Hill falling 6-1, 6-1 to Max Farber-McEntee and Wyatt Dupell tough in the first set, but still falling to Cameron Lukasik 6-4, 6-0.
In the other three doubles matches, Jonathan Corl and Brandon Millias ran into F-M’s top team of Rohan Dhawan and Riley Ma and lost, 6-0, 6-0, with Ryan Gallagher and Edwin Hirsh falling to Ben Farber-McEntee and Andy Sun 6-3, 6-1. Josh Matyasik and Holden Sarosy had a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Jaden Duggal and DavinWoolridge.
Liverpool had its own struggles when it faced West Genesee at the Pine Grove facility a day later, salvaging a point in singles, but falling to the Wildcats in another 6-1 decision.
Adam Ritter earned the Warriors’ point in a single-set, 10-8 victory over Ryan Joyce, with Aiden Barbour and Austin Huntress-Kennedy each dropping 10-4 decisions to, respectively, Noah Ruston and Ben Paoli.
WG also won all four doubles matches. Liverpool’s teams of Aaron Alejo-Eli Barbour and Caleb Arnold-Brayden Cabrey did not earn a single game in four sets, while Cole DenBleyker and Lance Loomis lost, 10-3, to Greg Fey and Ty Lisi. Matt Kane and Jonathan Kline had their own 10-3 defeat to David Puma and Michael White.
West Genesee went on to stun F-M 4-3 two days later, which didn’t help C-NS much, for the Northstars had to face the Hornets again and didn’t get a point in the rematch, falling 7-0.
Hirsh, moving to singles, battled hard, but lost, 7-5, 6-4 to Fernando as Gallagher and Brue Hepel also had singles defeats. Matyasik and Sarosy had the closest doubles match, a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Sun and Ben Farber-McEntee.
Liverpool, meanwhile, prevailed 5-2 over Syracuse East, winning all three singles points as Alejo roared past Devin Kha 6-0, 6-0, with Huntress-Kennedy topping Ben Ashby 6-0, 6-3 and Aiden Barbour beating Thomas Nguyen 6-0, 6-1.
Moving to doubles, Ritter and Eli Barbour made it through a close first set, beating Hanh Duong and Matt Houck 7-5, 6-1, while Arnold, now paired with Shohbit Sharma, beat Chris Edmunds and Curran Shannon 6-4, 6-4.
