Now the really busy part of the schedule hit for the Cazenovia girls golf team, and it tried to accumulate wins and move up the Onondaga High School League standings.
In its most important match last week, the Lakers were able to claim neighborhood bragging rights against Chittenango, prevailing 260-294 over the Bears last Wednesday at Woodcrest.
Much of Cazenovia’s margin came from the fact that Sophie Clancy shot a 56 for nine holes and Josie Avery had a 57, while Courtney Holt was third among individuals with a 66. Emily Forrett and Cady Webb both posted 81.
As for Chittenango, the low round of 70 was recorded by Abigail Owens, beating out totals of 72 from Bailey Ford and 75 from Brooke Cullen. Emma Albach and Emily Collado each shot 79.
Before this, the Lakers prevailed last Monday against Westhill 245-255 at Camillus Country Club, largely because the 52 shot by Clancy was seven shots better than the 59 from the Warriors’ Kate Vaughan.
Some help came from Holt, who shot a 61 to tie Westhill’s Julianne Bleskoski for third, and Avery, whose 62 was five better than the Warriors’ Charlotte Roth.
Chittenango lost last Monday to Marcellus 234-322 at Tuscarora, with no one able to shoot lower than a 78 that Owens posted. Six Mustangs golfers beat that total, led by Grace Alexander (56) and Kendall Koloski (57).
Following their head-to-head match, Cazenovia and Chittenango both lost on Thursday, the Lakers falling to Bishop Grimes 251-255 despite Clancy’s 48 beating the 49 by the Cobras’ Brina Deppoliti.
Meanwhile, the Bears took a 216-293 defeat to Christian Brothers Academy, Skyler Byrne’s 70 the low round for Chittenango as the Brothers’ Annie Kilmartin led her side with a 56.
Cazenovia had its own match against CBA a day later. The Lakers lost 215-252, though Clancy’s 51 at Cazenovia Country Club beat the 52 from the Brothers’ Elizabeth Lucas and 53 from Kilmartin. Avery finished with a 61.
That same Friday, Chittenango broke into the win column, edging Bishop Grimes 289-293. Collado claimed individual honors with a 68 as Carolyn Myka added a 71, one ahead of three Cobras golfers.
