A relatively tame April allowed area golf courses to open earlier than normal. It also helped the girls teams at Cazenovia and Chittenango, for neither of them had to wait to practice outdoors before their match schedules commenced.
Cazenovia began with a Laker duel against its namesakes from Skaneateles last Tuesday, where it lost, 228-237. Sophie Clancy shot a 57 for nine holes at Skaneateles Country Club, but two Skaneateles players, Tess Peterson and Lili Winkelman, matched those totals.
That same day, Chittenango, playing on its home course at Woodcrest, opened its season against Westhill, a close battle that the Warriors claimed as it beat the Bears 265-273.
Bailey Ford and Emily Collado both shot 67 to lead Chittenango, while Westhill got a 63 from Kate Vaughan, and teammate Grace McMahon had a 67 of her own.
Both teams played again a day later, Cazenovia defeating Bishop Grimes 135-145 with rounds of 33 from Clancy and Courtney Holt at Cazenovia Country Club to match those of the Cobras’ Abby Fletcher and Brina Deppoliti.
At Woodcrest, Chittenango took a 228-265 defeat to Marcellus. Abigail Owens, shooting a 64, led the Bears, but five Mustangs beat that total, led by the 54 from Sophia Matthews. Collado had a 66 and Ford a 67, with Emma Albach, Anastasia Joynt and Courtney Peryer each shooting 68.
Chittenango lost on Thursday to Skaneateles 239-305, unable to get any round lower than the 73 from Emma Albach. Five Lakers had lower totals, led by Peterson’s 52 and Lauren Marshall’s 57.
And in Friday’s 211-301 defeat to Christian Brothers Academy, Chittenango had Victoria Mone lead her side with a 65. Aubrey Mills had a 47 for the Brothers, seven ahead of the 54s from Annie Kilmartin and Hanna Kang.
