At different points during an otherwise light week of games in the April school break, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls lacrosse teams both had to confront well-established SCAC Metro division opponents.
The Warriors, who beat C-NS on April 11 and Rome Free Academy two days later, now welcomed state Class B no. 5-ranked Fayetteville-Manlius to LHS Stadium last Thursday afternoon.
And it proved quite a good game, with Liverpool able to find plenty of gaps in the Hornets’ defense, but not enough of them as it took a 19-11 defeat.
An active first half had the Warriors keeping pace, for the most part, only to fall behind 10-6, and the margin got worse in the latter stages as F-M’s speed and skill took over.
Colleen Tifft and Bella Brancato had three goals apiece, while Kendra Hall scored twice. Jenna Irwin had a goal and two assists as Emily Salanger and Makaylla Farino also earned goals.
Combined, Samantha Bates and Abby Cole made seven saves, but couldn’t keep everything out. The Hornets featured Annie Steigerwald, who amassed six goals and two assists as Kiera Shanley added three goals.
Two days earlier, C-NS, still in search of its first win of the season, visited West Genesee, and got off to a great start, but had little else go right in a 17-9 defeat to the Wildcats.
The Northstars jumped out with back-to-back goals, but then had WG answer with a 6-0 run that put them in front for good, followed by a 5-0 spurt that made it 11-3 going into halftime
Though it could not rally, C-NS did have Brooke Molchanoff pick up three goals and an assist, with Payton Baker and Paige Dorgan each scoring twice. Fran Tortora had a goal and assist, with Victoria Iannotti also converting. Molly Molchanoff and Gabrielle Reid had one assist apiece.
Spreading its production around, the Wildcats got two goals and five assists from Sam Detor, with Emily Stratton notching four goals as Sophia Scialdone scored three times for a hat trick.
West Genesee takes on Liverpool (5-2) Thursday night, this before undefeated, state no. 2-ranked Baldwinsville visits LHS Stadium on Saturday afternoon as C-NS gets its own shot at F-M on Tuesday and then visits Marcellus on Saturday.
