Another season is underway for the Baldwinsville girls golf team, who like other area squads was able to get outside and do on-course practice far earlier than in some of its previous springs.
At least in the short term, that extra work paid off, the Bees prevailing 217-235 over Oswego in last Tuesday’s opener at Oswego Country Club.
B’ville had the top three individual scores, led by Cara Vredenburg, who put together a nine-hole total of 49, just ahead of the 50 from Margaret Dec and the 51 from Colleen Vredenburg.
Oswego’s Hailey Furlong had a 57 and Elyse Mannacia finished with a 58, while the Bees saw Katie Naprawa finish with a 67.
Back home at Timber Banks on Thursday afternoon, B’ville faced East Syracuse Minoa Blue and moved to 2-0 on the season, defeating the Spartans 215-233.
Cara Vredenburg’s 46 was the lowest individual total by seven shots over Colleen Vredenburg, who had a 53. Though Giovanna Vito and Carey Sloan each shot 57 for ESM Blue, Dec matched that total and Naprawa added a 59.
That same day, Liverpool had its first match of the season, taking on Central Square, and led again by the Avotins sisters, the Warriors routed the Redhawks 186-263.
Nataly and Mia Avotins both have qualified for the state tournament in seasons past, and expect to get there again. To open 2019, Nataly Avotins shot a blistering 33 at Liverpool Country Club as Mia Avotins added a 42.
Hanna Dombroski, shooting a 50, was third among individuals, one shot ahead of Central Square’s low round of 51 from Emily Barnes as Julia Commano gave the Warriors a 61.
After its own match Tuesday against Central Square, B’ville have its first SCAC Metro division match when it faces Liverpool on Friday afternoon, and both teams from Cicero-North Syracuse open this week, too.
