Even after it broke into the win column when it topped Jordan-Elbridge on April 6, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team could not follow up that effort with another victory.
Instead, the Lakers, visiting Watertown last Tuesday night, took a 10-7 defeat to the Cyclones, its efforts done in by one rough stretch.
Cazenovia fought back from an early deficit to tie it, 4-4, by halftime, but in the third quarter Watertown moved out in front for good, outscoring the Lakers 5-1 in that frame as Will Delagarza (three goals, one assist) led them.
Trying to fight back late, the Lakers could not catch up, though Brian Pezzi and Cole Basic did both score twice. Gannon Houghton had a goal and assist as Brody Coleman and Tony Heaney also found the net. Ian Fostvelt made seven saves, but Cyclones counterpart Evan Richardson got 11 saves.
It figured to stay tough on Saturday, when Skaneateles paid a visit to Cazenovia College’s Christakos Field. And this latest Lakers dual would go 18-11 in Skaneateles’ favor.
Pezzi did manage to find the net five times, with Basic contributing three goals and one assist. Houghton got two goals as Coleman had a goal and assist. Ryan Romagnoli and Ty Freyer also earned assists. For Skaneateles, Evan Brunelle had four goals, with John Danforth (three goals, one assist), Pat Hackler and Grayson Brunelle (each with two goals and three assists) helping out.
Chittenango had plenty of its own struggles, illustrated by last Tuesday night’s game against LaFayette, where the Bears gave up 14 goals in the first half and fell to the Lancers 18-5.
Shane Kolb did managed a pair of goals for Chittenango, while Zeph Scott, Ethan Robles and Caleb Barnard had one goal apiece. Nate Addison made 14 saves despite LaFayette’s onslaught that included seven points apiece from Kaleb Benedict and Skariwate Papineau as Benedict had five goals and two assists, with Papineau earning four goals and three assists.
That was the Bears’ lone game of the week, as it would rest nine days before hosting Jordan-Elbridge on Thursday and going to Cortland on Saturday. Cazenovia would visit Tully Tuesday before hosting New Hartford Thursday afternoon.
