Each of Baldwinsville’s track and field teams would have their first competition of 2019 as part of a three-team meet last Wednesday that also featured Fayetteville-Manlius and East Syracuse Minoa.
And it proved a success for the boys Bees, who knocked off the Hornets 69-63 as it completed the sweep by topping the Spartans 81-56.
In a close 400-meter dash, Michael Lawrence, in 53.63 seconds, edged Connor Waldron (53.97) for the top spot, Lawrence and Waldron later helping B’ville finish first in the 4×400 relay in 3:47.72.
Aidan Micho, who also ran in the 4×400, won the high jump when he cleared 5 feet 6 inches, two inches ahead of F-M’s Ryan Serp. Robert Thompson nearly won the long jump, his 19’2” just behind the 19’3” from ESM’s Ermin Alemic.
Sam Mellinger ran the 100-meter dash in 12.05 seconds for a runner-up finish behind ESM’s Myles Riggins (11.73), with Mellinger also going 26 seconds flat in the 200-meter dash, second to F-M’s Corey Gallagher (22.89).
A close discus event had Steven Miller throw it 103 feet 1 inch to edge the 102’11” from F-M’s Sawyer Dereszynski. Dylan Keller had the best B’ville finish in a distance race, going 2:10.92 at 800 meters for second place.
In the girls event, B’ville’s Karen Ekure claimed two sprints, going 13.24 seconds in the 100-meter dash and then prevailing in the 200-meter dash in 27.90 seconds.
Jenna Wallace threw the discus 76’2” to win that event and had a second-place shot put toss of 25’9 ½”. Catherine Iven was second in the 100 hurdles in 19.22 seconds.
Still the girls Bees lost, 67-65, to the Spartans, while also falling to the Hornets 85.5-46.5. Fiona Mejico led F-M, getting first-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (18.62 seconds) and 400 hurdles (1:14.92).
