Except for the lightest and heaviest weight classes, the Cazenovia wrestling team could not get on the board during last Wednesday’s OHSL Liberty division match against Marcellus.
The Lakers lost, 66-10, to the Mustangs, who prevailed in four of the five bouts that lasted all six minutes and were helped by Cazenovia having to forfeit three times – at 120, 132 and 138 pounds.
Carter Polhamus, wrestling at 285 pounds, gave Cazenovia its lone pin, earning his fall over Mark Frost just past the midway point of the second period.
Up at 99 pounds, Shaun Zampetti continued his fine season, pulling away from Gavin Ciota in a 12-3 majority decision to improve his season record to 13-8.
Four different times, close bouts went against the Lakers, including a 195- pound duel where John Frega only surrendered a single escape to Tom Kinsella, but lost 1-0.
At 182 pounds, Jake Tobin dropped a 6-4 decision to Nate Farino, with Matt Knutsen earning points at 113 pounds in a 9-6 loss to Carl Santiarello and Gerald Viehauer (126 pounds) competitive in a 9-6 defeat to Tim Okhman.
That same night, Chittenango wrestled at Mexico, and earned a few more points, but the Bears lost 55-18 to the Tigers.
Devin Myers won the opening bout at 170 pounds, rolling past Harley Wakeman 7-1, but Mexico won the next seven bouts, only one of them close as Blayde DeBlieux, at 99, fell to Ryan Gates 8-5.
Peyton Denney broke the Tigers’ string at 120, pinning Derrick Sciarabba near the end of the second period. Mark Young (126 pounds) followed with a second-period fall over Michael Smith as Joe Mariani, at 138, needed an overtime takedown to beat Tom Gessner 5-3.
Chittenango goes to Oneida this Thursday before competing in Saturday’s Red Devil Duals at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, while Cazenovia, after its own Wednesday trip to Mexico, takes part Saturday in the OHSL Liberty/Patriot championships at Hannibal.
