Up close, the Baldwinsville wrestling team found out just why Cicero-North Syracuse had found its way to the top of the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division standings.
The Bees dropped last Wednesday’s meet with the Northstars 56-25, actually leading at the midway point of the match before C-NS closed it out with wins in seven of the last eight bouts.
They opened at 160 pounds, B’ville forfeiting the first two bouts, but then getting on the board at 182 pounds when Luke Eberl nearly got a technical fall against Julian Zavaglia, but settled for a 14-0 win to improve to 21-7 this winter.
Dom Sposato followed at 195 pounds by pinning Adam Rush in 23 seconds. Billy Loadwick claimed a forfeit at 285 pounds to improve his mark to 22-6 as Aiden Cali, at 99 pounds, took 83 seconds to pin Dan Livesay.
With that, the Bees were up 22-17, but then the Northstars took over. The next six bouts included three pins, two forfeits and one close call at 113 pounds where Max Naples pushed Harrison Portorsnok to overtime, but a takedown allowed Portorsnok to win 4-2.
There was a bright moment for B’ville near the end at 145 pounds, where Nate Hahn pulled out a 7-4 decision over Devin Southworth. The Bees are home Thursday night to face Canastota.
