Whether it was lopsided, or decided in overtime, the Fayetteville-Manlius and CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey teams both ended up quite happy after last Friday night’s games were done.
While the Hornets were busy crushing Ontario Bay 13-0 at Cicero Twin Rinks, the Brothers went to Lysander Arena and, trailing Liverpool most of the way, rallied to prevail 6-5 in overtime.
CBA/J-D’s effort was a display of resilience and patience. Liverpool was quite good at the outset, leading 2-0 after one period, and despite the Brothers’ improvement the Warriors still carried a 3-2 edge to the final period, where it scored twice more.
Yet CBA/J-D caught up, 5-5, and won it in OT with a big effort from Simon Lessor, who had a three-goal hat trick plus an assist, helped by Adam Louise, who had a career-best four assists.
Lessor didn’t work alone, though, as Seamus McIntyre had one goal and one assist, with Hudson DiNapoli earning a pair of assists. Seamus Nicholson had a goal as Finn Wheeler and Cole Mathews also earned assists.
For Liverpool, Connor Boland scored twice, with single goals going to Matt Gagnon, Jack Irwin and Pat Langlois. Marco Palumbo joined Langlois in earning two assists. CBA goalies Joe Salvador and Ethan White combined for 26 saves.
While all this was going on, F-M was taking Ontario Bay apart, improving to 9-3-1 on the season with its second double-digit outing to go with the 12-1 win over New Rochelle late in September.
The Hornets expect similar success Tuesday when it travels to face Watertown IHC in advance of a key game against Cicero-North Syracuse Thursday night at the Twin Rinks.
The win over Liverpool lifted CBA/J-D’s record to 5-6-2 overall, but to reach the .500 mark it needs to topple unbeaten, state no. 3-ranked Syracuse Tuesday at Meachem Rink, with another big test against West Genesee set for Thursday back at Onondaga Nation Arena.
