Once again, the Chittenango girls volleyball team is steamrolling past all of its opposition, even those who, in years past, may have given them real trouble.
The Bears’ opening match of 2019 came last Thursday night when it hosted Tully, a traditional power undergoing a rare transition. And Chittenango pounced on this, sweeping the Black Knights in three sets.
Tully had seen its long-time coach, Denise Abbott, retire following the 2017-18 season. Now under the direction of Jeremy Cook , the Black Knights had started 5-0, only to drop three of four matches late in December.
Chittenango made sure Tully never got close to toppling them, the Bears blitzing its way through the first set 25-9 and the second set 25-12. The third set was lopsided, too, as Chittenango won 25-14 to close it out.
Tyla Cutrie was dominant at the net, putting away 21 kills to go with three blocks and two aces. Most of those passes came from Katie Simmons, who had 23 assists. Savannah Penoyer added three kills as she, along with Brenna Stanton and Bayla Cutrie, had four digs apiece.
Improving to 8-0 with this sweep, the Bears would have back-to-back matches against Cato-Meridian and Weedsport early this week before a Friday match against Fabius-Pompey.
