Since a Dec. 9 defeat to Bishop Kearney, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls basketball team has easily turned back all competition while again moving to the front of the SCAC Empire division standings.
The Red Rams hosted Oswego last Tuesday night, exactly one week after beating them 61-30 on the Buccaneers’ home floor. The second game did not differ much from the first, except that the margin was greater.
J-D bashed Oswego 66-28 this time around, improving to 4-1 on the season as it charged out to a 22-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and didn’t let up until it was 58-18 at the end of three periods.
Before the starters sat out the fourth quarter, Gabby Stickle poured in 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Paige Keeler had 13 points, with Sydney Baker getting most of her 11 points from three 3-pointers. Andrea Sumida and Kailey McKenna had seven points apiece.
As that went on, Bishop Grimes and East Syracuse Minoa both took defeats at home, the Cobras falling 49-33 to Skaneateles as the Spartans had a 54-42 loss to Cortland.
Grimes, trying to rebound from a narrow Dec. 15 defeat to Chittenango, kept things close with Skaneateles most of the way, but ultimately saw the Lakers get a comfortable margin during the second half.
But at least the Cobras witnessed some history as Skaneateles forward Olivia Dobrovosky broke the school’s career scoring record for girls basketball with her 1,293rd point, going past the old mark of 1,292 set by Elizabeth Lane.
Dobrovosky finished with 15 points, more than twice the total of Grimes’ own 1,000-point scorer, Abby Wilkinson, who was held to a season-low six points as Sarah Snavlin got 13 points and Lora Marial added nine points.
Meanwhile, at ESM, the Spartans stayed with Cortland most of the game, but paid for dry spells in the second quarter (where it was limited to seven points) and in the fourth quarter, where the Purple Tigers outscored them 17-9 to get away.
Angelina Thomason had 12 points, with Julianna Barton adding 10 points. Raychel Underwood had seven points and Holly Carr six points as Cortland got 16 points and eight rebounds from Lyndsie Babcock, with Shyanne Lewis getting 10 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
Fayetteville-Manlius had to go face reigning Section III Class A champion West Genesee last Wednesday night, and got overwhelmed by the Wildcats in a 71-24 defeat.
Other than Lexie Roe (nine points) and Ava Angello (six points), the Hornets were well-contained as WG built a 64-16 lead through three quarters, led by Kaitlyn Walker, who poured in 22 points as Mackenzie Smith contributed 16 points.
On Thursday night, Grimes took on Syracuse Academy of Science, who reached the state Class C finals a season ago before moving up to the Class B ranks this winter.
SAS beat the Cobras 59-49, but the margin didn’t reflect how the Atoms took over in the middle stages, especially a third quarter where it outscored Grimes 21-3 to establish a 55-28 lead.
Sarah Snavlin did make a series of late 3-pointers (six in all) and led the Cobras with 19 points as Abby Wilkinson got 16 points. Meanwhile, Freey Pleasants had 19 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals for SAS as Xyel Bradford added 15 points and 12 rebounds.
ESM played that same night and lost, 60-25, to Central Square, who got away by outscoring the Spartans 22-2 during a decisive second quarter.
Angelina Thomason still had 10 points, but no other ESM player had more than four points as, for the Redhawks, Julia Mann had 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals, with Morgan Ransom adding 14 points and five rebounds.
On the Friday before the holiday break, Christian Brothers Academy returned to the court, falling 58-45 to Westhill as Warriors forward Jenna Larrabee proved unstoppable, earning a career-best 31 points.
No one on the Brothers’ roster could match that production as Brooke Jarvis led with 13 points, with Leana Heitzman adding 10 points and Emily Hall nine points. Larrabee got help from Imani Watts and Catherine Dadey, who had 11 points apiece.
J-D kept on rolling with a 75-19 victory over Cortland as 10 different players scored at least two field goals, the production spread around so well that only Keeler, with 19 points, reached double figures. Baker, Sumida and Momo LaClair had eight points apiece.
F-M, meanwhile, rebounded from its West Genesee loss, going to Henninger and prevailing 59-40, most of the margin built when it outscored the Black Knights 34-16 in the second and third quarters.
Roe’s 21 points included four 3-pointers as Fish stepped up, too, with 15 points. Alexis Schneider added six points as Tanyea Jansson paced Henninger with 14 points.
